Flower shed update!! 💐

Last weekend we soft launched the flower shed,  with our locally grown tulip bunches. It was a very successful weekend and we are so thankful for the support we've received so far!

There will be a limited amount of tulips available and currently the shed is closed while we wait for the next flush of tulips to bloom.

We thank you for your patience as we navigate our first year with the flower shed. Watch for re-opening updates soon!

We are located at 320 1st Ave West in Brooks (beside K.Rae Refined Aestetics)

Plump ranunculus corms ready for pre-sprouting!

I started a couple of trays earlier this week in white, pinks, pastels, purple, peach, and red. The plan is to transplant them into our high tunnel at the end of this month, so we can have blooms by the end of May.

Ranunculus like cooler weather. Lasting 4-6 weeks, they will start to die off early/mid July.
By starting them now we hope to stretch to that 6 week mark.

I know I have said it before, but I will always brag on these beauties as they are truly a favorite. Sometimes called the rose of the spring, they have the most beautiful layers of delicate petals, which can easily last 10-14 days in a vase.

They may not look like much now, but in just a few short weeks our first tulips will be blooming- just in time to celebrate the first days of Spring.

Tulip season will run for about 8 weeks beginning the first week of spring, through to Mothers Day.

We have some previous favorites growing along with new varieties we hope you'll love as much as we do.

We also have some exciting news to share about our upcoming season here at AhBloom Fresh Cut Flowers, that will make it even easier to access our fresh bouquets- sneak peak to come soon!

In the meantime, here's your reminder that no bad things can come from adding some fresh flowers to your life 🌷

When I think about my flower journey and the people who were a part of it, I'll always remember this woman.

My husband's "Granny," as we called her, was always growing different things in her yard. I remember she had  bleeding hearts growing up from under a ramp leading up to her front deck, a sign that they were a resilient plant Indeed.

She would come out to our acreage, often with my mother in law, and together with my husband, we'd  wonder around the yard, noting any new plant additions or talking about vegetables in the garden.

Granny had a lot of first-hand knowledge and also a lot of trial and error stories. One thing I learned from her was that no plant is too precious,  that we shouldn't try and grow it, and that experimenting is a big part of growing anything.

In her later years,  when dementia set in, my mother in law would still bring her out, and we'd still wonder around the yard. I think being outside amongst nature brought her calm and peace.

Granny left us before the flower farm began. I wish so much that we could have shown her what we've done. I can picture my husband telling her all about the greenhouse he built, while we eagerly showed her all the different flowers. I think she would have really loved it all.

I think about her in every season, and I am grateful for the knowledge she shared with us throughout the years.

Happy heavenly birthday 🌷

We've been taking a bit of a break from social media since the storm hit that took out most of our flowers in August.

I am happy to tell you all we were able to finish off our season without having to give any refunds to any of our subscribers.

It may have taken longer to get the bouquets out, but I believe we were able to offer quality product with what we still had growing in our high tunnel.

This is our third year growing here at AhBloom Flowers and it was full of ups and downs for sure, but all around I think we had a successful season.

The tulips bulbs have arrived, and we are excited to be forcing all of our tulips this season!

More on that later - for now I wanted to share the final subscription bouquet that went out this season.

Last night's  storm that ripped through Brooks and the County of Newell brought devastation I haven't seen before.  Hail the size of golf balls that punched and tore siding off homes and garages, stripped shingles and broke windows.  It caused water damage and downed trees,  power lines, and tranmission towers. I have read it traveled 500km from the Foothills to Saskatchewan.

In an event like this, I count my blessings that my little acreage west of Brooks was left largely unscathed. I know there are so many dealing with the aftermath of damage.

But I did lose one thing,  and it is a very important thing to me and my little flower business.  All our outdoor flowers were destroyed by the wind and hail. What was once rows of blooming Sunflowers, Snapdragons, Cosmos, and Zinnia, were reduced to stocks and a carpet of leaves.

On the bright side-  it was not a total loss. Our high tunnel greenhouse that holds flowers is ok, so I will assess what I can put together for bouquets for September's subscribers over the next couple of weeks. I will reach out if refunds will be needed. I do not know yet if I will be able to offer anymore flowers to the public this season, but I will post updates as I go.

In this line of work I am learning that one has to be able to adapt to what Mother Nature has in store -  for now I will take a breather and start on clean-up.
