A sweet potato doesn't grow the way a regular potato does. You don't cut it. You don't bury it. You grow plants off its skin and pull them away 🍠

Set a sweet potato in warmth and moisture and it does something strange — leafy shoots push straight out of the tuber's surface. Each of those shoots is a "slip," a whole future plant. Let them reach six inches to a foot, twist them off, and stand them in a cup of water. Roots appear in days. One tuber gives you a handful of rooted slips, sometimes many more.

Here's the part that trips people up: this is a warm-season crop, the opposite of everything else in the spring garden. Sweet potato slips are frost-tender and sulk in cold ground. You wait until well after your last frost — soil at sixty-plus degrees, warm nights — before they go out. Rush them into cool spring soil and they rot.

🌿 How to grow from slips:
- Sprout a whole sweet potato in a warm, bright spot until shoots reach six inches to a foot
- Twist each slip off the tuber and stand the bottom half in water; roots form within a few days
- Wait to transplant until three to four weeks after your last frost, once the soil has warmed to at least sixty degrees
- Plant each rooted slip four to six inches deep with the leaves above ground, about a foot apart in loose soil — the buried nodes become the storage roots

🌱 One thing to watch for:
- Get them out of the ground before the first hard frost in fall. Frost damage runs downward from the vines into the roots, so if the tops get hit, dig right away

Potatoes are one of those crops where the tiniest bit of extra effort pays off big time. Shoveling a little loose dirt up around the base of the stems might not look like much when you're out there doing it, but it’s crucial for protecting the young spuds growing just under the surface from getting sunburned and turning green.

By the time harvest day finally rolls around, you realize those little mounds were hiding way more food than you ever expected. For most folks who've been growing them for years, hilling isn't even a question—it’s just a standard part of the summer routine, right up there with w**ding, watering, and keeping an eye on the patch.

Stop what you're doing and think about that for a second.

Fifty eggs. Laid deliberately, strategically, and almost invisibly on the underside of a single leaf in your garden. The mother ladybug didn't place them there randomly. She walked your plants first. She found your aphid colonies. She chose that exact spot because she knew — instinctively, without a gardening book or a YouTube tutorial — that her babies would hatch hungry and need to eat immediately.

Within 3 to 5 days those eggs become larvae. Within days of hatching those larvae begin consuming aphids at a rate that would make the most aggressive pesticide manufacturer quietly jealous. Up to 400 aphids per larva. Multiply that by fifty eggs on a single leaf cluster. That is 20,000 aphids eliminated by the contents of one tiny cluster you could cover with your thumbnail.

And it happens silently. Invisibly. On the underside of a leaf you probably never thought to flip over.

This is what your garden is doing without you. This is what has always been happening in healthy gardens since long before pesticides existed. Nature built a system so elegant, so precise, and so effective that our greatest mistake has been assuming we could improve on it with a spray bottle.

Flip your leaves over this week. Learn what these eggs look like. And when you find them — because you will — do the most powerful thing a gardener can do.
