Your HVAC and plumbing plans start with the layout of your home

When you look at the plans for a new home, it is easy to focus on where the kitchen will go, how the bathrooms are laid out and how each room will be used.

Those choices also shape how HVAC and plumbing can be designed within the home. Plumbing needs routes to reach kitchens and bathrooms, while a ducted HVAC system needs space to move air throughout the house. Heating and cooling equipment also needs to be considered within the overall layout.

The structure of the home plays a role too. Walls, floors and ceilings all affect where plumbing and HVAC components can be installed and how they travel from one area of the home to another.

There’s a lot more behind your vents than you can see.

When ductwork is planned for a new home, the layout of the house helps determine how air will move from the HVAC system into different rooms.

In a ducted system, supply ducts carry heated or cooled air through the home. Return air also needs a path back to the system so it can circulate again. The size and route of the ductwork will depend on the home and the HVAC system being installed.

Once everything is finished, most of that ductwork is hidden inside walls, floors and ceilings. What looks like a simple vent in a bedroom or living room connects back to a system that was planned around the home long before you moved in.

Good ductwork planning starts with understanding the home, where the air needs to go and how it needs to get there.

When one drain starts moving slowly, you notice it. When several drains around your home start doing the same thing, it's worth paying attention.

Several slow drains can indicate that water isn't moving freely through a shared part of the drainage system. A restriction farther within the plumbing can affect more than one fixture and may also be accompanied by gurgling sounds or backups.
