Doors to Somewhere - AITO Installation 2026

Created for Art in the Open 2026, Doors to Somewhere invited visitors into a playful world of colour, pattern and reflection.

A circle of oversized doorways formed a maze with no prescribed entrance, exit or destination. Visitors could wander, run, peek through openings and discover shifting views of the installation, the surrounding landscape and one another. At its centre, a mirrored column reflected and fragmented the experience—placing each visitor within the artwork itself.

Part carnival, part funhouse and part portal to the unknown, Doors to Somewhere was designed to awaken curiosity and make space for play.

We are thrilled to be leading this year’s freeLAB: Urban Interventions with the talented students from the Dalhousie University School of Architecture.

Over the past week, 10 curious and creative students took on the challenge of reimagining Victoria Park—Charlottetown’s largest public park—through the lens of accessibility, inclusion, and community.

Public parks are some of our most important shared spaces. They are places to rest, play, gather, reflect, and connect. Thoughtful design can transform these everyday spaces into environments that welcome everyone and strengthen the social fabric of our communities.

Students began by developing a master plan for the park, exploring opportunities for play, rest, and viewing while considering circulation, accessibility, and the diverse ways people experience public space. They then selected one detail to develop into a prototype that will be brought to life during next week’s design-build phase.

It’s inspiring to see the next generation of designers tackling real-world challenges with creativity, empathy, and a deep understanding of how small interventions can make a meaningful impact.

We were thrilled to work with Jennie and Peter on the interior design for their new Coastline location, helping to bring their vision to life.

These two are incredible entrepreneurs who continue to raise the bar for Fredericton’s food and beverage scene. Between Coastline and 11th Mile, they’ve created some of our absolute favourite places to eat, and it was an honour to play a part in their latest venture.

The interior is warm, refined, cozy, and minimal, with every detail thoughtfully considered to ensure every seat feels like the best seat in the house.

If you’re ever in Fredericton, do yourself a favour and order the garlic fingers. Trust us—you won’t regret it.

Introducing intern Architect, Mayra Prestes!

Originally from Brazil, Mayra joined 9Y in 2023 and became an Intern Architect in 2024. She graduated in Architecture and Urbanism from the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) in 2018 and worked independently for three years before moving to Prince Edward Island in 2022 to pursue a Graphic Design diploma at Holland College. While studying, she represented PEI at the 2024 Skills Canada competition in Quebec.

Mayra is inspired by the ability of thoughtful design to shape how people feel and experience a space.

Outside of work, she enjoys quiet walks in nature, swimming, ice skating, planning future travels, and spending time with her family.

A sneak peek at some of our interior design concepts for the Abegweit First Nations Community Recreation Centre — designed in collaboration with Architecture49.

The project envisioned a net-zero, climate-resilient community hub bringing together recreation, wellness, culture, and gathering spaces for Abegweit First Nation and the broader community.

Our design focused on openness, movement, natural light, and creating warm, welcoming spaces that feel active and connected throughout the building.

Grateful for the opportunity to help imagine what this important community space could become.
