North Vancouver | Study wall and breakfast nook

A long desk wall in flat-cut white oak, with room for two: shaker upper cabinets, an open shelf, a lit oak back panel and a drawer bank below the stone top. Flat-cut veneer is sliced parallel to the centre of the log, which produces the arched cathedral figure in the door panels. The lighting is recessed into the underside of the open shelf, so it washes down the back panel instead of shining toward whoever is seated.

In the breakfast nook, a built-in banquette follows the corner windows, with white oak seats over painted, V-groove panelled backs.

Where's the hardware?

On these fronts, the pulls are routed into the door and drawer edges instead of being screwed onto the face.

With no surface-mounted hardware, the reveal lines stay continuous from one end of a run to the other, and a full wall of storage reads as a single surface. In an entry or a narrow bathroom, it also means nothing projects into the room.

Edgemont, North Vancouver | Kitchen, complete

In June we shared this kitchen mid-install. Here it is finished: painted shaker perimeter cabinetry with a panelled refrigerator, stacked wall ovens and a panelled hood, around a white oak island.

The refrigerator is panel-ready. Its doors take custom panels built to match the surrounding cabinetry, with the reveals set to line up with the adjacent doors and drawers, so the appliance reads as another tall cabinet.

Point Grey Home | Reading nook

A walnut library wall with a built-in reading seat at its centre. Open shelving on either side, drawers below and beside the seat, and a recessed light in the canopy above it.

On a library wall, shelf span matters. Books are dense, and a long unsupported shelf will deflect over time. Dividing the wall into narrow bays keeps each shelf's span short, so the shelves stay flat under a full load.

Flat-cut or rift-cut white oak?

Both come from the same species. What changes is the angle the log is cut at, and that changes how the wood looks and how it behaves.

Flat-cut veneer is sliced parallel to the centre of the log, which produces the arched cathedral figure. Rift-cut oak is cut at roughly 30 to 60 degrees to the growth rings, giving a tight, linear grain with very little flecking. It is also the most dimensionally stable of the common cuts, which suits slab doors and panels that need to stay flat.

Both are shown here, in two North Vancouver projects.

Noven One, Downtown Squamish | Kitchen

Light woodgrain slab cabinetry, with the hood surround and floating shelf clad in black laminate so they read as one block with the black backsplash. A tall storage wall runs opposite the working run.

For those who want the details:
- Cabinet boxes: plywood core
- Doors and drawer fronts: Formica laminate
- Drawer slides: Grass Dynapro soft-close undermount
- Kick bases: plywood, in place of adjustable plastic legs

A plywood kick gives each run continuous support along the floor, and laminate fronts hold their colour and surface under daily use in a building where every kitchen is expected to perform the same way.

Horseshoe Bay | Installation in progress

Painted shaker cabinetry going in under a vaulted cedar ceiling. The base and upper runs are set and levelled, the refrigerator enclosure and hood surround are in place, and the built-in beside the stair is installed. Countertops are next.

Cabinets are set before the countertops are templated because the fabricator measures from the installed boxes. The run has to be level and square first; any error in the cabinets carries straight into the countertop.

Point Grey Home | Kitchen

Walnut slab lowers and a full-height walnut appliance wall, paired with white slab uppers. Neither run carries surface-mounted hardware. The pulls are routed into the door and drawer edges, which keeps the reveal lines continuous from one end of the kitchen to the other. The walnut panels lining the ceiling coffers overhead are ours as well.

Walnut was selected for its grain character, machining performance and dimensional stability. Before installation, the cabinet boxes and structural components were checked for stable moisture content. Wood takes on and gives off moisture with the air around it, and installing it at equilibrium is what keeps the reveals even once the heating season dries the house out.
