With summer officially behind us, what will you miss most fresh from the garden?

OUR PICK? MELONS, HANDS DOWN!

This year, we harvested around a dozen melons from our greenhouse, but the Crenshaws were the real prize!

With our cool start to the season, we weren’t sure they’d ripen at all. We left them on the vines until the cold had nearly finished them off—and we’re so glad we did! These melons turned out absolutely delicious. Definitely one of our favourite harvests of the year!

Calling all chayote growers!

This was our first year giving them a shot, and while we ended up with miles of green vines, we didn't get a single fruit!

We ran a soil test back in the spring and everything was well within optimal levels, so we're a bit stumped. Knowing it wasn't the best growing year overall, is there anything we should do differently next season?

Would love to hear any tips or tricks from anyone who's had luck with them!

A little library for our community—with seeds coming soon!

We planned this little free library when we built our fence 1.5 years ago… and never got around to it. Then a neighbour offered us hers when she moved, and suddenly the project was back on!

Now we’re getting ready to add a free seed library too. Take a book, share a book, swap some seeds, and let’s keep growing a community that shares!

Hard to believe it’s already October and we’re still harvesting tomatoes, melons and peppers from the garden!

We’re definitely enjoying it while it lasts, though. With the forecast ahead, we’re expecting maybe another two weeks of outdoor harvests for warm weather crops

Let’s play a little game!

This year we grew a tomato variety called “Looks Like a Pepper”—and let me tell you, it caused a lot of confusion at the markets.

We had people looking at the plants asking, “What kind of pepper is it? Is it hot? Sweet?” And more than once we heard, “But it has tomato leaves… did you put the wrong label on it?”

So here’s the challenge:

Which hand is Theo holding an actual pepper in, and which one is the tomato variety “Looks Like a Pepper”?

Mystery solved!

The mystery tomato we shared the other day has officially been identified… Orange Jam!

This is our first year growing it, and we have to say, it quickly became one of the standout varieties in the garden. Between the flavor, texture, and those wonderfully funky fruits, Orange Jam is definitely coming back next year!

Feeling pretty proud of ourselves this year.

Usually, the seeds we save are scattered all over the house. A little here, a little there, and somehow we can never remember where we put anything.

This year, they’re all together in one spot.

Okay, technically they’re tucked away on the grow shelves and completely out of sight, but still… progress.

Two standout tomato varieties from this year's garden!

Black Bull's Heart has quickly become a favorite, with the perfect balance of sweet and tangy flavor and a texture that's neither too soft nor overly fleshy. It's definitely returning next year!

But the real surprise was our mystery tomato!

When repotting seedlings, we dump cells with ungerminated seeds into the garden. Somehow, one plant sprouted in the middle of our artichoke patch and produced seriously delicious, fleshy, wonderfully deformed fruits!

Did a little backyard “shopping” today, and there’s no question about it—this has been the year of the cucumber!

We’ve been picking a dozen or more almost every time we head into the garden. At this point, the cucumber plants are producing faster than we can eat them!

We’ve also started setting aside some of our favorite varieties to save seeds from for next year. The paper bags are our very official, highly sophisticated seed-saving system.

Looks like we may have accidentally created a cucumber empire.
