Frosty mornings have returned—and while it may still feel like fall in the valley, higher elevations can already bring snow, ice & rapidly changing road conditions.

Before heading out:

❄️ Fully defrost every window
🛞 Check your winter tires & tire pressure
⛓️ Carry chains when required
🚗 Slow down & leave extra following distance
📍 Check DriveBC before travelling

Be especially prepared around McDonald Summit on Highway 24, Messiter Summit near Blue River & the highway corridors toward Valemount and McBride.

And if you come across tow operators, road crews or emergency personnel working along the highway, please slow down, give them plenty of room & follow all traffic-control directions.

They’re working hard in unpredictable conditions to help keep our highways moving. Let’s help make sure everyone gets home safely.

Fall means more wildlife moving throughout the North Thompson. When travelling our highways and rural roads, keep your eyes ahead, scan the shoulders & slow down in known wildlife corridors especially around dawn and dusk.

If you encounter an animal or debris creating a hazard on a provincial highway, report it to:

Casual Labour Workers Needed – Starting Tomorrow

On Call Services is looking for casual labour workers for approximately 2–3 days of work, starting tomorrow morning, assisting with the recovery of cedar shingles.

Requirements:

Hard hat

Steel-toed boots

Work gloves

Pay: $25.00/hour

⚠️ PLEASE NOTE – CARGO NORTH OF BIRCH ISLAND ⚠️

The cargo located north of Birch Island, which has been moved clear of the white line, is NOT free for the taking. This cargo is owned by the cargo insurance company and is awaiting proper recovery.

We delineated and secured the cargo off the roadway to maintain two safe lanes of travel throughout the weekend while we obtain the proper traffic-control permit from the Ministry of Transportation to safely recover it.

Unfortunately, people have already stopped and removed items. The vehicle parked north of the cargo is equipped with a dash camera, and the vehicles and trailers that have stopped to take material have been recorded.

More importantly, please think about the safety risk. This is a dangerous corner. Stopping along the highway and loading material puts you, our crews, and the travelling public at risk. We do not need to see someone seriously injured or killed over a bit of wood.

Please leave the cargo alone and allow us to complete the recovery safely and properly.

Personnel will now remain on scene monitoring the area for the remainder of the weekend.

Thank you for respecting the site and, most importantly, keeping everyone on the highway safe.

When you see flashing red, blue or yellow lights ahead, please slow down and move over when it’s safe. Behind those lights could be a tow operator, first responder or highway worker simply trying to do their job—and make it home safely.
