From Rescue to Release!
Earlier this summer, a young Northern Goshawk was discovered near an active nest site after its nest likely fell to the ground during a recent windstorm. Recognizing the importance of protecting wildlife encountered during operations, Forbidden Timber crews ensured the situation was reported and coordinated with wildlife professionals.
Following consultation with MARS Wildlife Rescue Centre, the approximately 18 or 19-day-old nestling was safety transported via boat from the head of Toba Inlet to Campbell River and taken to MARS for rehabilitation. Over the following months, MARS staff successfully raised the bird until it was ready to be returned to the wild.
In mid-September, 2026, Forbidden Timber employees received the goshawk from MARS and transported it back to its original nesting site for release.
Following MARS guidance, the bird was released by Forbidden Timber employees within 10 kilometres of the original nest site, ultimately returning to a location just 2.6 kilometres from where it had been found. After a 2.5-hour journey by boat, the carrier door was opened at 10:56 a.m. The goshawk immediately flew from the carrier and perched in a maple tree directly overhead, providing an unforgettable moment for everyone present.
This successful release highlights the care and diligence demonstrated by Forbidden Timber employees when encountering wildlife in the field. By following established protocols, seeking expert guidance, and acting with integrity, the crew helped give this young goshawk a second chance and contributed to a positive conservation outcome.
A huge thank you to MARS Wildlife Rescue for their guidance and efforts!
