Cedar deck rebuild in Courtenay, BC | This 25-year-old pool deck was becoming a safety concern. Once we started taking it apart, we found more rot than expected — the stairs and railings were completely rotten, and most of the original framing needed to be replaced.

Replacing the framing around the pool took some problem-solving, since the existing layout didn’t follow standard octagonal angles.

We rebuilt the deck framing with treated lumber and added joist tape for moisture protection, then finished it with new cedar decking, stairs and railings.

Once the stairs were back, Puddles was also back on deck keeping Sean company. 🐶

We’re nearing completion on this Comox bedroom and bathroom renovation, designed by Wayne Truax.

The bedroom is taking shape around stained-teak millwork by John Roberts of Willow St Woodworking, with bedside tables, shelving and storage built directly into the room.

A ceiling-height pocket door connects the bedroom and bathroom, with its track recessed into the ceiling to keep the top of the door aligned with the room.

In the bathroom, full-height, book-matched porcelain creates a continuous mirrored pattern through the veining. Before it could be installed, the existing studs had to be individually shimmed to create a consistently flat surface for the DensShield and porcelain.

Even the cold-air return was considered. Instead of adding a standard metal grille to the wall, it was incorporated directly into the baseboard for a cleaner finish.

We also reworked the former hallway and walk-in closet to create a larger bedroom, and installed a wider exterior door to bring in more natural light.

Happy birthday Mark – the B in B.I.G. Timber! Two weekends ago Mark completed a big goal: 100k, one day. the Alpenglow 100 Coast Mountain Trail Running ultramarathon in Valemount, BC.

With an 8:30 PM start, rain, thunder and lightning all night, 100km distance and 5000m total vertical gain, Mark completed the race within 15 hours, 21 minutes and 8 seconds … 22nd place overall!

We are so proud!

Our Courtenay client came to us with a deck that had reached the end of the road — rotten framing and a pergola taken over by overgrown wisteria. They wanted to renew their outdoor living space so they can get back to spending time outside without the worry of catching their feet on a rusty screw.

This build offered an opportunity to expand the usable space. We added a lower level for more room to gather, and built a new cedar pergola.

We even gave the old pergola a second life, repurposing its top into a garden feature elsewhere on the property.

A nice milestone for our crew too: this was Evan’s first job back from school, where he learned about floor framing in one of his modules. We put his skills to the test, and he passed 🎉

That’s a wrap on a backyard set up for countless summers to come.

Our Courtenay clients needed three bathrooms completed before welcoming parents from out of the country into their home this June.

After the project had originally been delayed getting underway, they were looking for a contractor who could confidently take it through to completion. From our first conversation, we moved quickly to prepare their estimate, get the project underway, and keep everything moving toward their deadline.

By coordinating the trades, maintaining clear communication, and keeping the project on track, we completed all three bathrooms before their family arrived.

New floors can make a room feel updated, but trim is what makes it feel finished. This homeowner had lived with unfinished transitions and basic trim details for over a year.

Wanting something that reflected their background in the forest industry, they chose real wood over MDF or prefinished alternatives.

We sourced hemlock trim, custom stained it to complement the new floors, and installed new baseboards, window casings, and door trim throughout.

This Courtenay home addition prioritizes natural light with increased space through vaulted ceilings, high windows and a sun tunnel. Our last update left off when the slab was poured. With the foundation complete, the next priority was getting the addition framed and closed in while the weather was still on our side.

This addition was designed with vaulted ceilings ranging from 8’ to 11.5’, helping the new bedroom and living space feel larger, brighter, and more open. High clerestory windows were incorporated to bring in natural light while maintaining privacy from neighbouring properties.

Renovations often involve creative problem-solving. The home’s former exterior bathroom window will be repurposed as a built-in shower niche, while a new sun tunnel was added to bring daylight back into the bathroom after the addition enclosed that wall.

To create a seamless transition between old and new, the roof structure was framed over portions of the existing roof system before being tied together into one cohesive design.

Carport, framed in for better weather protection. The homeowner wanted to make this carport less exposed to wind, snow, and weather, with plans to eventually add a garage door and security grates.

For this project, we framed in the front opening, added pony walls along the sides for future decorative security grates, and matched the existing true 1x8 lap cedar siding so the new work tied into the home.

We also amended an existing beam for greater support and patched/sided an opening on the exterior of the house while we were there.

Practical upgrades like this can make a space more useful, protected, and ready for the next phase.
