Some finishing details from a new build on Hornby Island.

My part in it: the cedar ceilings, the hemlock walls, the maple floor registers cut flush into the floor.

This is the quiet work that holds the whole house together.

A recent medical office renovation here in Courtenay.

I managed the renovation from start to finish, with a focus on creating a cleaner, warmer and more considered space.

The curved reception desk was designed around the room and finished with fluted oak detailing to bring some texture and warmth into the reception area.

I also designed and built the wraparound yellow cedar desk by hand, working with the natural character of the wood to create something completely unique to the space.

Converting an existing outdoor structure into a custom cedar sauna.

This project had a little bit of everything I enjoy about custom carpentry and woodworking, from building out the cedar interior and bench system to working through some creative finishing details.

One of my favourite parts was preserving the original carved doors. I restored and insulated them, clad the sauna side in cedar. I also designed and made the wooden door pulls from scratch, starting with a template in the shop and shaping each one by hand out of yellow cedar.

Taking an existing space and transforming it while keeping some of its original character is exactly the kind of work I enjoy.

I’ve been quiet on here for a while, but this is a pretty good example of what I’ve been up to.

A custom commercial sauna being built from the ground up within an existing space here on Vancouver Island.

One of my favourite parts is the original timber post and brace running through the middle of the room. Rather than concealing it, it’s becoming part of the finished sauna.

The framing, insulation and vapour barrier are starting to disappear, and the good stuff is going up. Thermally modified hemlock overhead, with a lot more wood still to come.

There’s a long way to go, but I wanted to share some of the work before it all gets hidden.

I was recently commissioned by some of the world's toughest clients (my partner Beatris and I) to make this bend end bench for our bedroom. Now that I'm getting older it's harder to put my socks on in the morning, problem solved 😉 This piece is made from a salvaged Spalted Maple slab from .designs in Courtenay and English Walnut from . I really enjoyed creating the organic curves on this one.
