Have you ever wondered why we take so many photos during demolition?

Because those photos can become important evidence during reconstruction.

In bathrooms, WINMAR® Nelson may uncover waterproofing systems such as Schluter® behind a tub or shower. Depending on the policy and approved scope, replacing that system may require documentation showing it was present before demolition.

That can create a tricky situation. Current installation standards or manufacturer warranty requirements may call for a waterproofing system, while the insurance scope may only authorize replacement of what was there before.

That is why we photograph assemblies as they are opened. Good documentation helps show exactly what existed, supports discussions about the rebuild scope, and reduces uncertainty later.

Have you ever wondered why tackless strips sometimes stay behind after carpet is removed?

Depending on the insurance scope, replacement may not always be included. In some cases, WINMAR® Kootenay is asked to preserve the existing strips so they can be reused during reconstruction.

That means we have to think ahead. Once the carpet is out, those strips can leave sharp points exposed along the perimeter of the room. A simple safety step we do after this photo, is to cover them with foam or another protective material so technicians, trades, and homeowners are not stepping beside an open row of sharp fasteners while the space is under repair.

It is one of those small details that helps keep a jobsite safer and reduces unnecessary replacement.

Have you ever looked at attic insulation and wondered if everything you see is actually the same material?

Here you can see vermiculite debris mixed in with cellulose insulation. That distinction matters, because vermiculite in older buildings can be associated with asbestos contamination and should not be treated the same way as ordinary loose-fill insulation without proper assessment.

WINMAR® Nelson approaches these attic conditions carefully. Before disturbing the material, we identify what is present, establish the appropriate controls, and plan removal so suspect material is not spread through the attic or into the rest of the home.

Mixed insulation can make the scope more complicated, because separating materials after they have been disturbed is not always practical.

HEPA vacuuming.

After asbestos-containing materials are removed, the job is not done until the area has been carefully cleaned. HEPA vacuums are designed to capture extremely small particles that standard shop vacs are not meant to handle. That matters because the goal is not just removal—it’s making sure any remaining fine dust and debris are properly collected from the work area.

This final cleaning step helps leave the contained area ready for the next phase, whether that is visual inspection, clearance procedures, or reconstruction. It is one more layer of control in a process where attention to detail matters.

Have you ever wondered why we sometimes seal off every stud bay after opening a wall?

Once drywall and insulation are removed, those cavities can become pathways for dust, debris, and air movement into adjacent spaces. WINMAR® Nelson uses temporary sealing and containment at penetrations and openings to keep the work area controlled while mitigation or rebuild continues.

This is especially important when wall cavities connect to other rooms, floors, or concealed spaces. A few small openings can allow dust to travel much farther than you would expect.

Have you ever wondered why we measure the thickness of flooring before it is removed?

Because the replacement floor does not just have to look right. It also has to fit back into the space properly.

WINMAR® Kootenay records the thickness of the existing flooring so homeowners can choose a replacement with a similar profile where possible. If the new floor is thicker, it can affect door clearances, transitions, baseboards, and casings.

That may mean undercutting door frames or moving and reinstalling trim to accommodate the new height. Depending on the claim and policy, those additional modifications may not always be covered.

A small difference in flooring thickness can create a much bigger rebuild detail later.
