Aside from completing the survey you can help by making your property part of the solution! Reach out to Shubie Tree Experts, we can help you meet your tree management needs while maintaining habitat for wildlife.

Halifax lives up to its reputation as the city of trees, but did you know that current design guidelines don’t include recommendations for wildlife-friendly shrubs or other plants?

We and allies at the Bird Friendly Halifax Coalition are compiling a list of species to recommend as additions to HRM’s “Red Book”, the document that guides municipal design among developers, consultants, and contractors. We want to know what you want to see in HRM’s urban forest. Design principles that benefit nature, like the use of native species and layered habitats, won’t work long term if they conflict with public values or desires. Tell us what you think by filling out our online survey.

Below -20 C with windchill but that doesn’t stop us! With the sun in the sky it was a pleasure climbing these old beeches and sugar maples. As a matter of fact this time of year is best to prune mature trees since they are dormant. Reduces their stress and makes it easier for us to see everything without leaves. Give us a call to book your winter pruning. 902-220-9600

These are two different cross sections of branch unions from the same red maple tree. The first photo illustrates a well formed union where the wood fused and strengthened as the tree grew. The second photo is an included bark union that failed in our recent high winds.

As professional arborists we have the training required to identify these weak points in a tree’s canopy and mitigate the risk of failure. An even better solution is to perform stuctural pruning before trees reach maturity. This allows us to prevent weak unions from forming.

If you are considering planting this spring be sure to inspect the nursery stock closely for poor structure, or better yet, give us a call for a free quote!

How many pruning cuts do you see? There may be half a dozen or so obvious ones but that is only a fraction of the cuts that have been made to keep this tree safe and healthy over its many pruning cycles. A combination of heading cuts, reduction cuts and removal cuts of diseased or damaged branches all contribute to the form of veteran trees like this ash. When in leaf one would hardly notice, but often a trained eye can spot dozens of wounds. Some sealed over and many at different stages of that process. Here’s to all the arborists out there who advocate for pruning and preserving old trees!

Blue skies over Armdale yesterday! This little pulley is one of my favourite tools. It is so versatile and makes it quick and easy to dial in the rigging set up for those awkward branches overhanging obstacles.
