Happy New Year Everyone! I hope you all had some quality time with your families over the holiday season. This is what the season is all about in my opinion. There is nothing that can replace time alone with your immediate family and close friends.
Well, it looks like this year is going to start the same way last year ended, converting single family homes into two, by adding an apartments in the basement. We are handling the electrical for the conversion. The basement is going to be a really nice 1 bedroom apartment, which are in great demand, as the city grows. It is really incredible the amount of rent even a 1 bedroom can generate these days. What a great way to supplement an income, especially heading into the retirement years.
I was speaking to another customer yesterday who already has a 1 bedroom apartment in the basement. He is getting $500 per week for it on AirBnB in Dartmouth. It took me a while to do the math, but that's $2000 a month if it is rented all the time. For a 1 bedroom! Holy! I did not realize that they could be that profitable.
He already has it rented out for most of January and February. Good for him, he will have a bit of fun money for the summer! 😎

We have been busy doing lots of renovations, and changing lots of outdoor plugs so the Christmas lights work again. As we head into Christmas, I hope that the season brings good health to you and your families. We deserve a great Christmas after the year we have all had. Stay safe and be happy.

Well, here we go again. We have three more rental properties that we are converting to electric heat. Landlords love this type of heating system! There is no furnace to get cleaned up and replaced, no oil tank to replace or refill. No oil line bleeding to be done when your tenant burns all the oil in the tank. The space under the furnace can often become another room or other useful space, and tenants love that. More space for the same rent money. Electric heat is also great when changing tenants as well. Simply have the meter read, and that's usually all the adjustments; no oil to refund, or charge the next tenant. The whole job takes a week or so, depending on the size of the home, then some patching drywall and repainting, and you are finished with your heating system for a very long time. The heaters last almost a lifetime. We love doing these conversions, and have done many over the years. It is a great upgrade to any home.

We are essentially back to work, servicing our customers again. We completed a service upgrade yesterday for the customer that had his wires burning when he came home from work. It was a result of an electric furnace being hooked up to a 100 amp service. With the new 200 amp service, now in place, this family can now sleep easy.

We are upgrading another on Tuesday, for the same reason. Another electric furnace installed on a 100 amp service. This is very dangerous, and has the potential to burn a house to the ground. The electrical demand that an electric furnace requires is simply too much for the 100 amp service. This customer was forced to use plug in room heaters to heat the home because the furnace would not work. They were cold this winter. Too bad, because it did not need to happen. Hard to believe that some companies are allowing this situation to happen. Trouble is, the situation really gets problematic mostly on the coldest days of the year, when heating demand is very high. This is when the problem becomes very real.

The good news is that on Tuesday, we will do the upgrade, and the issue will be resolved. They will be much more comfortable this coming winter, and can sleep easier, knowing that a potentially harmful situation has been resolved.

We started another interesting job yesterday. Another rental, this time a duplex. Replacing old 60 amp services with 2 new 200 amp services. The owner is eventually going to convert to total electric heat, and has decided to upgrade the services to the appropriate size for this purpose. When the time comes to do the conversion, the power will be there waiting. Saves time and money down the road. Tenants will eventually pay for their own heat. The savings for the landlord are not to be underestimated. Makes the property more profitable, and more valuable. Less maintenance as well.

Our Story

Home Style Electric is a residential electrical company which started out in 2009 and incorporated in 2011. At first catering to the small jobs, that sometimes larger companies tended to ignore, Home Style Electric soon established itself as a honest and reputable residential electrical company. If the electrical job is in a home, we can do it! If you have a large commercial job you would like done, please call someone else. I have worked for companies in the past that claim to be able to do residential, commercial, and industrial electrical work. Although this may be true to some extent, there is no substitute for specialization. We ONLY do residential electrical work, and are well outfitted to do just that. In my opinion, you cannot do all kinds of work as effectively as a company that specializes. The materials, tools, and personnel are different for each job, depending on whether you are working in someone’s home, or a large commercial space, or a factory, or industrial setting. I believe there is a difference in installing a receptacle in an island in somebody’s brand new kitchen, and running pipe on the ceiling of a new commercial space. These are different jobs requiring different skill sets, tools, materials. We have chosen to specialize in the residential sector. I believe we are one of the best in the industry in our local market. Whether you are re-doing your kitchen, rewiring your home, wiring a new home, or taking care of deficiencies resulting from a home inspection, we can help. Our good "old fashioned" customer service and high calibre of work for a fair price have allowed Home Style Electric to thrive and grow for the past 11 years. If you would like to get some electrical work completed, and you live in a home, call us at 902-802-2809, we can help!
