"Topping" a pasture isn't something practiced much up here , but I thought I'd give it a go. Topping involves mowing pasture to knock down weeds, brush or even grasses before they've gone to seed. Because we've had another dryer year, I waited for the cows to crop a bunch of the grass down before mowing down the Wildrose bushes, raspberries, thistle and Aspen that was starting to pop up. Time will really tell if this was worth it, but I don't seem much negative to it

Here is a nice little before and after on today's brush mowing project. This will open up the low spots to a little more sunlight, helping them dry out and be more accessible to the cows to graze.

The pigs have done a really great job in clearing out the underbrush in their pasture. In the warmer afternoons, they move into the thicker brush like this area, and root around and nap in the shade.

Give Away!

Relic Ranch is giving away a whole pig, cut, cured and wrapped! It will be available for pick up at Lawrence's within the next two weeks. All you have to do is "Like" this post, "Follow" Relic Ranch and comment "Done" on this post. Draw will be made on July 13, 2026

Our pigs are fed local ingredients, free of hormones, soy free and are pasture raised.

*Very Important*
Winner must be able to pick up the winnings in it's entirety from Lawrence Meats in Dawson Creek BC, within a week of the pig processing completion. If 1 week passes without it being picked up, a second draw will take place for a new winner. Shipping is not available.

Relic Ranch will be dropping off some pasture raised pigs to Lawrence's next week! If you'd like your name on one, let us know.

In the meantime, the latest rain made plowing a lot easier for my 1956 Fordson Major. The easiest route with these old fields would be a chemical fallow, but because I'm trying to do things half organically, the old sod will get plowed under and this field will get worked a few more times this summer to try and keep the weeds under control
