Here’s an old stone fireplace restoration I did this spring which I failed to share on my business page so here it is!
-Repointed entire two stories of stone work.
-Rebuilt section above roof (exterior) and installed cap.
-Rebuilt fire box arch with a lower apex since the original one was too high which led to a smoke filled room. 🙁 👍

Happy New Year! Here's a tidbit of some of the jobs I worked on in 2019, including a wall I built in France :o

Looking ahead to 2020 my summer is already almost entirely booked. However, if you have any indoor stone work such as a fireplace veneer, hearth, or carving, feel free to contact me for a quote. I have time between now and May.

Wishing you all the best for 2020!

Here are examples of repointing jobs I've done in the past. These are both before and after shots showing the drastic difference repointing makes when done right. When completing a repoint job it is crucial to cut back the old mortar to twice the depth of the joint width, this insures a secure bond within the units and provides good structural strength. Too often I've noticed buildings that have been "repointed" by only slapping a bead of new mortar over top of the old joints.. This may improve the look of the building but does more harm then good..
1st photo is a section of foundation in Perth, ON where there was spray foam in the cracks! This is not the best way to repair your foundation hot tip haha. After repairs, you can recognize in the photo that it is in fact the same stones in the before and after shots but the differences are second-to-none.
2nd photo is a limestone chimney I repointed/rebuilt in Hilton Beach, ON. The previous mason had pointed it with a hard Portland cement which made it extremely hard to remove in order to fill joints back in.

On two occasions I had the opportunity to work at the Dunning Springs heritage site in Decorah, Iowa. I worked on a pedestrian bridge along side two professional masons, Ted Wilson & Sean Smyth. I learned so much from these fantastic masons and continue to use the techniques they taught me every day.
The bridge spans 16 feet and is entirely dry stone, meaning there is no mortar or cement holding it together, only the geometric shape of the arch. It was built to replace the historic bridge that had previously collapsed 150yrs ago.

The photos below illustrate the different stages of the construction. Enjoy!

Summer of 2017 I had the opportunity to build a dry stone retaining wall near St. Joseph's Island. This wall surrounds the house and is over 100ft long with plans to expand it next season. This is a great project and I am looking forward to picking up where we left off!
