Zinc strips are supposed to help keep moss in check, but they are not permanent protection.

This roof was a good reminder of why the parts homeowners cannot easily see still matter. The zinc had lifted and separated while moss kept growing underneath and around it. From the ground, you would never know.

That is why we look at the whole roof, not just the green patches.

We were alarmed to read this morning's Cowichan Valley Citizen report about dozens of young fish found dead in Oliver Creek near Lake Cowichan.

What's particularly concerning is that investigators are looking into whether runoff from nearby roof moss treatments may have contributed to the deaths. The cause hasn't been confirmed, but this is troubling news, especially for those of us working in the exterior-cleaning industry.

This is exactly why we built Valley Wise Exteriors a little differently.

We're proud to be BC Green Business certified and recognized as a Water Friendly Business through Surfrider Foundation Canada. We've developed our own oxygen-based roof treatment, invested in runoff mitigation, and participated in the Yellow Fish Road program to help protect our local waterways.

Apparently the gutters were feeling ambitious.

A little debris became a little soil, and the next thing you know, we’ve got a full landscaping project happening above the fascia.

If your gutters are starting to grow more than they drain, it is probably time for a clean.

We didn’t buy an orange truck to match the fall colours… but we’re absolutely going to pretend we did.

Valley Wise is heading into the next phase!

Over the past year, we’ve spent a lot of time building the equipment, systems, experience and service range needed to properly look after homes across the Cowichan Valley.

Now our focus is shifting even more toward community-based service.

That means spending more time in local neighbourhoods, getting to know the properties we serve, making exterior maintenance easier to stay on top of, and finding better ways to support homeowners before small issues become bigger ones.

Roofs. Gutters. Siding. Driveways. Seasonal exterior care.

The goal is simple: make home maintenance feel less reactive, less complicated, and more local.

We’ll be rolling out more of this over the coming months.
