June is throwing us it's typical complications where baby raccoons are concerned. The job gets a lot more challenging when the raccoon babies are able to run away from us. Add in difficult attic access, or in this case, no attic access and the job can go sideways if you don't know what you're doing.

At this raccoon job we just knew there were babies, even though the client told us they never heard them. The season, experience, and instinct all added up to that fact. This was a proceed slowly and monitor closely kind of removal.

With a propped one-way door and daily checks we finally got lucky today. The high heat and humidity pushed mom and babies into the vented soffit as they tried to stay cool. We could here them moving around so with a quick removal of a soffit panel we were able to get the babies out.

These chubby 7-8 week old baby raccoons are now set up on the ground waiting for mom to come out and move the whole family somewhere more appropriate. We will be back tomorrow to check on everything to make sure the job is progressing as it should.

Today this pretty little red-eyed vireo had the misfortune of flying into our kitchen window. Until today I had never heard of a red-eyed vireo. I had to look this one up in the field guide. Anyway, this one was a little stunned but otherwise seemed none the less for wear. A short rest in a magnolia tree, and it was off doing small bird stuff again!

Our first job of the morning was a squirrels removal. This past winter caused some ice damage and squirrels being ever opportunistic, took full advantage.

We were happy to arrive onsite to see mom and all the kids out enjoying the sunshine. No attic crawl required here! The babies are squirrels teenagers ready to get their own lives started.

We repaired the soffit and installed a one-way door to ensure any squirrels that could be inside can get out, but not back in. We be back out in a few days for our final follow up and entry point closing.

What a spring this has been so far! It's late May and the raccoon babies just keep coming. 🦝

We are seeing them at every stage. From newborns just arriving, tiny and helpless, barely recognizable as raccoons. To big burly babies, that are happy to bite you, just starting out on their first trips outside to learn raccoon stuff with mom. Dad is a deadbeat so it's all on mom.

What does this mean for us? Well, we can anticipate our days of crawling around sweltering attics searching for babies aren't ending anytime soon.

Wildlife removal work can be very difficult. It requires a good deal of knowledge about the animal you are dealing with and experience to safely and humanely solve wildlife problems.

Every now and then we run into a raccoon mom who isn't nice to work with! 🦝 Well who can blame them. They assume we are there to do bad things. This one had me watching my back while I worked.

This Saturday gave me another opportunity to take my son out on the road for another raccoon removal. This job took us to Sauble Beach where a raccoon set up her den in a little cottage. He gave grabbing the babies a try but mom wasn't having it.

This raccoon was a little snarly but we were able to safely remove the babies. Mom left for the outside on her own. The roof vent entry point is repaired and secure. The babies are waiting in the reunion box right next to the original entry point.

Mom will return this afternoon or this evening to retrieve and move her babies to an alternate den site.

This raccoon mom and I are getting pretty well acquainted. This was baby box check #3.

The box is warm, dry, and secure and for now, we suspect this raccoon doesn't have a better option for shelter right now. That's fine.

We are not in a rush for her to move on and now that she's comfortable in there with her babies we don't need to check on them everyday.

We love our daily interactions with wildlife. I'm sure they don't generally care for the encounter on their side.

After 27 years of crawling around attics, carefully removing baby animals, I've learned a few things. Acting calmly with intent, and keeping aggressive tone out of the process helps immensely. It reduces the stress level for nursing wildlife that are already under enormous strain raising large litters of rapidly growing babies.

Reducing stress on the animal is key to good outcomes. Stressed animals make poor decisions. Calm animals do the right things that ultimately help us to solve problems much more easily.

First stop of the morning is one of our daily baby box checks. Mom and babies have decided our warm and dry box is pretty sweet so they are staying put for now.

No problem! They can leave when they are ready. Until then, we will stop by every couple days to check and give mom a little nudge. Eventually she'll get tired of us poking around and will move the whole family.
