As another growing season arrives, the narrow window to safely repot most bonsai trees is about to begin.
Repotting is an important part of caring for your bonsai tree. Believe it or not, giving your roots some fresh soil and a little room to grow is as essential to your tree's health as pruning, watering, and feeding.
Whether you're brand new to the hobby or very experienced, I'm happy to give you the level of guidance you want. If you want me to do the repotting for you, or you just want someone to there for moral support, I'm happy to accommodate your needs.
If you need soil, I have a variety of basic substrates available for sale, either premixed or mixed to your liking, I only carry what I use myself. (Sorry. No Akadama available.) My basic gritty soil mix starts at $16 per litre but can be "stretched" a little further for some trees by adding additional inexpensive ingredients such as peat, coco coir, coarse perlite, or gritty sand. If you have a soil mix you prefer using, then by all means, please bring it along to use.
It would be best to provide your own pot if you're not re-using the existing one. I do have a variety of different sized training pots but they do get used up quite quickly. It's best to discuss this in advance to ensure availability and get pricing.
My basic fee for private 1-on-1 workshops in my back yard is $25 per half hour (minimum), plus any materials you might need from me. This should be more than adequate for most average sized bonsai (ie: shohin, or pots of 9" or less diameter). Larger, mature, or otherwise special cases may incur additional costs, but this varies and would be discussed and agreed upon in advance. Depending on your tree, you may not need to repot your tree this season and I'd be happy to help you figure that out. I'm also happy to discuss pruning and care, sharing what I know and what works for me.
I'm located on the West end of Edmonton and typically I'm a little too busy with my own trees to make house calls, so I would prefer you bring your trees to me.
