Daylight saving time is changing in Alberta.

Starting in November 2026, Alberta will no longer switch back to Mountain Standard Time. Clocks will stay on permanent Alberta Time year-round.

For most people, that means no more clock changes to worry about.

For some buildings, however, it may affect automatic doors that lock or unlock on a schedule.

If your automatic doors are connected to access control, standalone timers, timed locking systems, electrified hardware, or building automation, it’s worth confirming the schedule before November 2026.

Standalone automatic doors, or doors that are locked and unlocked manually, likely have nothing to worry about.

Not every automatic door call is about convenience. Some are about safety and security.

Yesterday we received a call from a care facility experiencing a failure on the memory care ward.

The automatic door operator had failed, leaving a secured door unable to properly secure the area. Until repairs could be completed, staff were forced to post security at the door to ensure resident safety.

When our technician arrived, we found the problem was more than just a broken arm. The operator itself had suffered an internal failure and required replacement.

Fortunately, our service vehicles are stocked with medium and heavy-duty automatic door operators. Although the existing operator was a lighter-duty model, we were able to select the correct replacement, complete the installation, program the operator, and restore the door to service—all in a single visit.

For the customer, that meant:
✔️ Security restored within hours.
✔️ No temporary repairs.
✔️ No return trip waiting on parts.
✔️ Less downtime and lower overall cost.

It's one of the reasons we invest in keeping our service vehicles well stocked. When critical entrances fail, every hour matters.

Another busy week in the field for the SHARC team.

Some of this week's highlights included:

✅ Retrofitting a double automatic swing door on a secure opening that required controlled access from both sides.
✅ Preventative maintenance and repairs on automatic sliding and swing doors to keep customers operating safely and reliably.

Every building has different requirements, and every opening has its own challenges. That's why we enjoy what we do.

At first glance, this looks like a typical set of automatic swing doors.

Behind the cover is a very different story.

This Stanley Allegion Access entrance includes redundant safety sensors, activation sensors, controller programming, and multiple integrated safety circuits. Every component has to work together exactly as designed to ensure the doors operate safely around pedestrians.

A sensor that's misaligned, disconnected, or programmed incorrectly can affect how the doors detect people and respond to traffic.

That's why automatic doors should always be serviced by trained technicians who understand both the mechanical and electronic sides of the system.

Our technicians are AAADM Certified Inspectors and work on automatic sliding and swing doors from virtually every major manufacturer.

This accessible washroom entrance is powered by a dormakaba ED100 automatic door operator, but there's much more happening behind the scenes.

When someone enters the washroom, the interior wave switch electronically locks the door for privacy. LED indicators clearly show when the washroom is occupied, and if assistance is ever needed, the emergency call button unlocks the door while activating an audible alarm to alert nearby staff.

To complete the system, access from the outside is controlled by a digital keypad, allowing entry only with a valid code.

It's a great example of how automatic doors, access control and emergency systems can work together to improve accessibility, privacy and occupant safety.

Another busy week in the books.

This week had a little bit of everything.

One stop had us chasing down why an automatic door wouldn't respond to push plates. Another involved a failing power supply that was causing issues with an electronic exit device. We also replaced worn components on a sliding door operator before they turned into a bigger problem.

Our technicians worked on:

• Camden washroom automation systems
• Access control integrations
• Safety sensors
• Electronic locking hardware

Every automatic door is a little different. Some problems are mechanical, others are electrical, and many involve multiple systems working together. That's why experience matters.

This week took us to banks, coffee shops, office towers, retail warehouses and commercial buildings throughout Edmonton.

No matter the brand, if it's an automatic swing or sliding door, chances are we've worked on it.

It was another busy week keeping entrances operating safely and reliably across Edmonton.

This week, our technicians serviced and repaired automatic sliding doors, swing doors, and fully automatic entrances for a wide range of customers, including banks, healthcare facilities, casinos, daycares, and downtown office buildings.

We worked on equipment from Stanley Allegion Access, Horton, NABCO, and dormakaba, while also completing an Akuvox intercom upgrade to improve secure building access.

No matter the manufacturer, our goal is the same—keeping automatic doors and access control systems operating safely, reliably, and efficiently.

Stanley Automatic Sliding Door Modernization

When two Stanley automatic sliding door systems needed a complete modernization, our team was able to complete the project over just two business days using genuine Stanley Allegion Access OEM components.

The retrofit included new iQ Controllers, drive assemblies, solenoid locks, safety sensors, belts, and pulleys, along with controller programming, wiring cleanup, and complete system testing to restore reliable operation.

We also reviewed the existing access control integration to ensure both the public and staff entrances operated exactly as intended, helping the customer better understand how the systems worked together.

Modernizing an aging automatic door system is often a cost-effective way to improve reliability, extend the life of the entrance, and avoid ongoing service issues.

With the record-breaking rain we’ve experienced this year, exterior automatic-door sensors have been especially vulnerable to water damage.

At this entrance, we replaced an obsolete, damaged sensor with a new BEA ULTIMO safety sensor and installed a rain accessory to provide additional protection from direct rainfall and water runoff.

The ULTIMO activates the automatic sliding doors as people approach, while its infrared safety technology monitors the doorway to prevent them from closing on someone in the doorway.

The rain accessory acts as a protective hood over the sensor. It is a relatively small addition that can help reduce water exposure and extend the service life of an exterior sensor.

A new automatic door and accessible washroom installation completed.

The project included dormakaba automatic door operators and a complete Camden accessible washroom control system.

The washroom system allows users to open the door automatically, lock it from inside and confirm when privacy mode is active. When the user is ready to leave, the system unlocks the door and automatically operates the exit.

A practical, coordinated solution that improves accessibility while maintaining privacy and ease of use.
