A workforce accommodation camp was being set up in Dawson City, Yukon, and the permit required drawings stamped by an engineer registered in the Yukon. CVL was brought in to review the camp buildings and provide the engineering needed to get the permit through.

Our work included a structural review of a three-unit modular office complex on stacked wood block foundations, checked against NBC 2020 and Dawson City's climate data. We also reviewed the cribbing foundation and firewall drawings, and designed a lined containment berm for the wastewater tank. Once construction was complete, we did the field review and issued a letter of assurance for the ramps, decks and walkways.

NAIT has broken ground on its Advanced Skills Centre, the largest capital project in the Edmonton polytechnic's history.

The $779 million facility, funded 75 per cent by the Government of Alberta and 25 per cent by NAIT, will cover 625,000 square feet on the main campus. It will bring 29 programs under one roof in spaces designed to mirror real worksites, and add capacity for 5,500 more students each year, raising NAIT's total to more than 15,000 skilled trades students annually. Dialog + GEC are the architects, PCL Construction is the construction manager, and the first students are expected in fall 2030.

CVL completed a damage assessment and repair recommendations for the flat roof decks on a three-storey home in Edmonton with ongoing water intrusion. The work included several site reviews, a review of an earlier investigation report, and a structural check of the joists supporting the rooftop deck.

The main issue was moisture trapped inside the roof assemblies. With impermeable membranes on the outside and poly on the inside, the cavities could not dry, and gaps in the rigid insulation let condensation form under the top sheathing. The repair specifies an unvented assembly with 11.25" of closed-cell spray foam, sloped sleepers for 2% drainage to the scuppers, a vinyl membrane, pest screens at the outlets, and air-barrier testing to confirm the system works.

Site construction has started on the refurbishment of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station in Ontario, with about $3 billion in contracts now awarded.

A joint venture of Aecon and Candu Energy, an AtkinsRealis company, holds a contract of about $1.7 billion to replace 1,520 fuel channels and 48 boilers for Unit 5. A second $1.3 billion contract, held by Aecon and Siemens Energy Canada, covers 14 new steam turbine rotors, generator overhauls, and new auxiliary and control systems. Once refurbished, the four Pickering B units are expected to produce 2,200 megawatts, enough for about 2.2 million homes. Reactor refurbishment is planned to begin in January 2027, pending regulatory approval.

Nuclear refurbishment is some of the most demanding work in the country. It combines heavy civil and mechanical work, strict quality control, and detailed planning across a multi-year program that will shape Ontario's construction workforce and supply chain.
