The Edmonton weather forecast is finally calling for some high heat this week.

For the biggest impact on keeping your home cool during high temperatures, focus on stopping heat before it gets inside and using cool outdoor air strategically.

Block direct sun on windows from the outside. Exterior shades, awnings, shutters, solar screens, or even temporary shade cloth make a huge difference—especially on west- and south-facing windows. Exterior shading beats interior blinds because the heat is stopped before it enters the house.
Close up the house during hot hours.

Once outdoor temperature rises above indoor temperature, close windows and doors and draw blinds/curtains. Do not keep windows open just because there's a breeze if that air is hotter than your house.

Night-flush the house. When it gets cooler outside than inside, open windows and use fans to move a lot of air through the house. In the morning, close everything back up to trap that cooler air.

Ceiling/portable fans can make you comfortable at a substantially higher indoor temperature, but they don't actually cool the room. Reduce indoor heat generation. Avoid the oven during the hottest part of the day; run dryers/dishwashers later; switch remaining incandescent/halogen bulbs to LEDs.

If you have AC, optimize it before replacing it. Clean/change filters, keep the outdoor condenser unobstructed, seal leaky ducts where applicable, and use reasonable thermostat setbacks rather than turning the system completely off and asking it to recover from an extremely hot house.
