Pictured here is The Comfort Maple Conservation Area which conserves what is widely believed to be the oldest and finest sugar maple tree in Canada, which got its heritage designation in June 2000! The maple tree stands about 24.4 metres tall, with a trunk circumference of 6 meters and estimated to be 400-500 years old!

Great information about new pest in Niagara

Oak wilt is a vascular disease of oak trees (Quercus spp.) that is caused by the invasive fungal pathogen 𝐵𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑧𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑎 𝑓𝑎𝑔𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑢𝑚. The fungus is spread both below-ground via root grafting from infected to healthy trees and above-ground by means of fungal spore spreading by Nitidulid beetles or bark beetles. 𝐵𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑧𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑎 𝑓𝑎𝑔𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑢𝑚 is believed to have been present in North America since the early 1900’s and has since been confirmed in 24 U.S. states. In 2023, it was detected for the first time in Canada, on private property in the city of Niagara Falls.
