Heat pumps and side effects.

Some info you should know.
Adding more load to your electrical system may require an upgraded service entrance and panel and don’t forget, Electrical permit.

You’ll need to install additional back up heat if you remove an oil furnace or oil boiler.
Heat pumps are NOT allowed to be your primary heating source.
So don’t let the rebates and sales lingo get away with not mentioning this unfortunate side effect.
It may cost you more money than they tell you about.

Hi folks,
Recently I have seen a lot of people wanting to replace base board heaters. Using 36 inch heaters to replace 72 inch or larger heaters.
Just because you have a heat pump.
Words of advice:
Just because you have a heat pump, electrical code/building code still requires adequate back up heat.
That means replacing heaters with the same wattage as being removed. The installing electrician that worked on the original build sized it for heating the house. DON’T change the sizing.
You’ll freeze this winter if the heat pump dies.

It is that time of year again when we pull out portable heaters and start using electric fireplaces and such.
Please do not use extension cords or splitters such as this in the right of the picture to extend power to heating sources mentioned. They should only be used on small load items for TV’s, stereos, or lamps.
They are rated 15 amps but don’t expect them to supply that power.
Check the item plugged in and limit the total load to 8-10 amps.
Also, any time you plug in to a wall plug or splitter. Ensure that the plug is secure and doesn’t pull out or drop out easily. If so, it time to have and electrician replace that device.
Stay safe!
Check your smoke detectors and GFI plugs are operating properly, monthly.

That time of year when the heat comes on and you don’t think about it.
Make sure your baseboard heaters have 4 inches of clearance to your curtains, book shelves and furniture.

So today, I had a customer ask me if it was a good idea to own, or rent a Hot Water Tank.

Here is a thought,
If it costs $10 a month for your tank rental. And the taxes collected on that is $1.50/mth
If there is even only one million homes with rented tanks. The Government would collect $1,500,000.00 dollars a month in tax revenue.
