The first course of shingles needs the right protection from the start.

For this project, we’re using Owens Corning® Starter Shingle Plus, designed to help secure the perimeter of the roofing system where wind uplift can be a concern.

The factory-applied adhesive strip runs along the eaves and rake edges, helping create a strong seal beneath the first course of shingles. The product is also designed to separate into two starter pieces, making for a clean, consistent installation around the roof perimeter.

It might not be a part of the finished roof you notice from the ground, but it plays an important role in helping the entire shingle system perform as intended.

Another layer, another detail, and another reason the complete roofing system matters.

What goes underneath your shingles matters just as much as what goes on top.

On this project, we’re using Owens Corning® WeatherLock® G Granulated Self-Sealing Ice & Water Barrier along the bottom six feet of the roof.

With the freeze-thaw cycles we experience throughout Ontario winters, melting snow and rain can create conditions where water backs up at the eaves and works its way beneath the shingles. WeatherLock® G provides an added layer of protection in these vulnerable areas, helping protect the roof deck against water infiltration associated with ice dams and wind-driven rain.

Its granulated surface and selvage edge also help create a secure seal between courses as the barrier is installed.

Another important layer in a complete roofing system designed with our climate in mind.

We’re taking this roof right back to the bones.

With the old sheathing removed, we have full access from above to install the baffles properly and create the airflow this attic needs. Then we rebuild from there.

New sheathing, baffles, drip edge, six feet of ice and water protection, upgraded ventilation and a dedicated exhaust vent all go in before the finished shingles take centre stage.

And for this one, we’re finishing it off with GAF Timberline UHDZ® shingles in Barkwood.

This is the part of roofing we love showing because when you see the process from the beginning, you realize just how much goes into the finished roof you see from the street.

A few roofs from the VK archives that deserve another moment.

Different homes, different rooflines, different materials, but the same level of care behind every one. From the roofing system underneath to the finishing details you see from the street, every project is built with long-term performance in mind.

Because a new roof should protect your home, but there’s no reason it can’t look this good while doing it.

Your attic needs to breathe from both ends.

On this home, there wasn’t enough fresh air entering through the soffits, and the existing ridge vent wasn’t providing enough exhaust for the attic space. Over time, that lack of airflow contributed to moisture buildup and significant deterioration of the roof decking.

We’re correcting the system from both sides by opening up the soffits to create proper intake and installing two Ventilation Maximum 301 tower vents to provide the exhaust this attic requires.

Ventilation isn’t just about adding a vent to the roof. Intake and exhaust need to work together based on the needs of the home.

A good ventilation system needs to do more than move air. It also needs to stand up to everything your roof is exposed to.

For this project, we installed two Ventilation Maximum tower vents based on the ventilation requirements of the home. Their solid steel construction provides a durable exhaust solution while helping prevent animals from accessing the attic through the roof vents.

It’s another example of why product selection matters. Every component we install is chosen with the overall performance and protection of the roofing system in mind.

When ventilation isn’t working properly, the damage can go far beyond what you see from the outside.

Heat and moisture need a clear path through the attic. Without proper intake at the soffits, baffles to maintain airflow and adequate exhaust ventilation, moisture can build up over time, contributing to mold, rot and deterioration of the roof deck.

On this project, that meant going back to the structure and rebuilding the system properly, including new sheathing, soffit, baffles, drip edge, ice and water protection and Ventilation Maximum vents.

The finished shingles are only one part of the job. How the entire roofing system works together is what protects the home long term.
