Lignum Design Ltd provided structural modeling and detailing services for the new Maskwa Medial Centre in Grande Prairie, Alberta which will introduce a team-based diagnostic clinic to 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮. The center embodies a commitment to healing, shared knowledge, and a collaborative spirit in healthcare, and its leader, Ken Drysdale, chose mass timber for the structural system due to its sustainability, natural warmth and beauty.
The project includes the first use of 𝑻𝒊𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒆 𝑵𝒐𝒅𝒆 (𝑻𝑪𝑵) connections as the primary connector between mass timber components, which supplement the slide-together metal connectors used elsewhere in the building. These connections were designed by Fast + Epp’s Lab to enable high-capacity and high-tolerance connections that reduce installation time by simplifying timber construction.
The mass timber advancements in this project mirror the innovative and tech-enabled spirit that the Maskwa Medical Centre brings to healthcare in Alberta. The medical center represents a vision for the future of healthcare—a future where patient-centered, collaborative care is accessible to all, honoring the legacy and aspirations of the communities it serves.
