Look up before you look down in the basement.

The band of wood framing above the foundation is the rim joist area. It sits at the outside edge of the home and can be easy to overlook because it is tucked between the basement ceiling and the floor above.

On a cool morning, walk the basement perimeter and notice whether that upper edge feels different from the centre of the room. Pipes, wiring and tight spaces can make this area especially detailed.

The attic hatch is easy to walk past, but it is still part of the ceiling separating your warm home from the cold attic.

On the next cool day, stand below it. Do you notice a chill around the frame? Does the hatch sit snugly? Are there visible gaps?

This is an observation, not a diagnosis. An attic should also be checked for moisture issues before insulation work. If you see damp insulation, water marks or signs of an active leak, find and repair the source first.

When the temperature drops, we often blame the thermostat. But the comfort problem may be happening farther out, at the home’s envelope: ceilings, walls, basement edges and the small penetrations that connect indoors to outdoors.

Try this on the next cool morning: stand near the centre of a room, then near an exterior wall. Notice the difference. You are not diagnosing the house; you are gathering a useful clue.

On the next cool September evening, take a slow walk from room to room. Pay attention to the spaces along exterior walls, the basement and any room that felt difficult to keep comfortable last winter. Does one area cool down sooner? Is there a noticeable change as you pass through a doorway?

Make a short list. Time of day. Weather. Which room. What you noticed.

That little bit of information can turn "the house feels cold" into a much more useful conversation about where the building envelope may need attention.

A rainy September day can make small building-envelope issues easier to notice. Maybe there is a damp-feeling corner, condensation near a window or a musty area that keeps returning.

Insulation is part of the conversation, especially when unwanted air and moisture are moving through gaps in the building envelope. Closed-cell spray foam is valued for its moisture resistance and its ability to restrict air and moisture infiltration when it is correctly selected and installed.
