1. Replace or clean the air filter.
A dirty filter restricts airflow, makes your AC work harder, increases energy bills, and can even cause frozen coils. Most homeowners should check filters monthly and replace them every 1–3 months.

2. Clear debris around the outdoor unit
Remove leaves, grass, weeds, and dirt around the condenser. Keep at least 2 feet of open space around the unit so it can properly release heat and run efficiently.

3. Test the AC before the first heat wave
Turn the system on early in the season to make sure it’s cooling properly. Catching issues in spring is much better than discovering them during a 35°C heat wave when HVAC companies are fully booked.

4. Check vents and airflow inside the home
Make sure vents are open and not blocked by furniture, rugs, or curtains. Poor airflow can make rooms unevenly cooled and put unnecessary strain on the system.

5. Schedule a professional tune-up
A maintenance inspection can catch worn parts, low refrigerant, electrical issues, or dirty coils before they become expensive breakdowns. Many summer AC failures are preventable with routine maintenance.

A simple spring check-up can improve comfort, lower hydro bills, and help avoid emergency repairs during peak summer temperatures.

AC Not Cooling Like It Should? Here Are a Few Things to Check First

Before assuming your air conditioner needs a major repair, there are a few simple things homeowners can check that may help identify the issue early.

Start with the thermostat. Make sure it is set to cool, the temperature is set lower than the current room temperature, and the batteries are still working if it is battery-operated.

Next, check your air filter. A dirty or clogged filter can restrict airflow, make your AC work harder, increase energy usage, and even cause the system to freeze up. In most homes, filters should be checked monthly and replaced every 1 to 3 months, depending on use.

Take a quick look at your vents and registers as well. Make sure they are open and not blocked by furniture, rugs, or curtains. Poor airflow inside the home can make it seem like the AC is failing, even when the system is running.

Outside, your condenser unit also needs breathing room. Grass, leaves, dirt, and debris around the outdoor unit can reduce efficiency and put extra strain on the system. Keeping the area around the unit clear can help your AC cool more effectively.

If you notice ice on the copper lines or indoor coil area, turn the system off and allow it to thaw. Frozen coils can be caused by airflow problems, low refrigerant, or other issues that should be inspected before the system is restarted.

Also, watch for signs that it may be time to call a professional, such as:

❌ Warm air coming from the vents
❌ Unusual noises from the system
❌ Water around the furnace or indoor unit
❌ Repeated breaker trips
❌ Ice forming again after thawing
❌ AC running constantly but not cooling properly

Catching small problems early can often prevent bigger breakdowns during the hottest days of the year.

At Premium Home Services, we help homeowners in Hamilton, Grimsby, Halton, Niagara, and surrounding areas keep their cooling systems running safely and efficiently.

If your AC is not keeping up, send us a message or give us a call. We are happy to take a look and help you understand what is going on before it turns into a bigger problem.

Avoid the summer rush and get your 📑AC Breakdown Risk Report today.

If Your AC Needs a Recharge… You Have a Bigger Problem.

Why it shouldn’t happen

HVAC and A/C systems are sealed systems. That means the refrigerant (Freon, R-410A, etc.) is designed to last the entire life of the unit.

If everything is working properly:

Refrigerant doesn’t get “used up”
It doesn’t evaporate or disappear
You should never need to add more
If you do need a top-up…

That’s your red flag 🚩

It almost always means there’s a leak somewhere in the system.

Common causes:

Corroded coils (especially in older units)
Worn rubber seals (common in car A/C after ~6–10 years)
Loose fittings or valves
Factory defects (rare, but happens)
Why topping it up is a bad move

Think of it like this:
You’re not fixing the problem — you’re masking it.

❌ The leak is still there
❌ You’ll lose refrigerant again
❌ Efficiency drops (higher energy bills)
❌ Can damage the compressor (expensive repair)

It’s basically a temporary band-aid that costs you more later

What should be done instead

A proper HVAC tech should:

Find the leak (pressure test, dye, electronic detector)
Repair the leak
Vacuum and recharge the system properly
Real-world rule

If someone tells you:

“Yeah, you just need a recharge every year”

That’s not maintenance, that’s an unfixed problem.

You smell gas… but ONLY when your furnace is OFF?

So here’s what’s happening…

Even when your furnace isn’t running, the gas valve is supposed to be completely shut, like a faucet fully off.

In this case, that valve isn’t sealing all the way anymore. There’s a tiny internal leak, so a small amount of gas is slipping through even when there’s no call for heat.

That’s why you smell gas when the system is off, but not when it’s running. When it runs, the gas gets burned properly, so there’s no smell.

The issue is, even a small leak like that isn’t something we leave. Over time it can build up, and it’s not safe.

Unfortunately, this isn’t something we can clean or adjust, the valve itself is worn internally.

The proper fix is replacing the gas valve so it seals properly again.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your furnace just reach out and we'll help you out.
