TARE WEIGHTS
In order to figure out the net weight of the refrigerant in your tank, you'll need to know the tare weight (TW), which is the weight of the tank when it is empty.
Here's a quick summary of the TWs for some of the refrigerant tanks we commonly see:
SINGLE USE 30lb TANK
TARE WEIGHT ~ 5lbs
The most common tank we see is a 30lb single use refrigerant tank. They're called 'single use' because they are not intended to be refilled, and newer versions of the tank have a stop valve to prevent refilling. These tanks often have "30lb / 13.6kg" on the label, indicating that they contain 30lbs of refrigerant when new. The TW on these tanks is 5lbs.
SINGLE USE 50lb TANK
TARE WEIGHT ~ 9lbs
These are less common, but very similar to the 30lb version. These single use tanks have a tare weight of 9 lbs.
AUTOMOTIVE 30lb TANK
TARE WEIGHT ~15.5lbs
These tanks are usually branded "AC Delco" or "Ford Motor Co.", and have a sturdier construction and high collar. They hold 30lbs of R12 when full. These tanks are reusable and refillable, and unlike the single use tanks, they have the Tare Weight stamped on the collar, in the following format: "TW - 15.5lbs". Typical TWs for these tanks is in the range of 15-16 lbs.
HEAVY 30lb REFILLABLE TANK
TARE WEIGHT~ 18lbs+
Similar to the reusable automotive tanks, these also hold 30lbs of R12, but have slightly heavier construction, and therefore a larger TW. We're not sure if these tanks were specific to an industry, or more of a general purpose reusable tank (if anyone knows, leave a comment, thanks). The TW is stamped on the collar of each tank.
