: The Barefoot Check 🦶🔨
June at the Haliburton Highlands cottage means the socks are off and dock season is officially here. But before you run down to the water, you need to perform a quick bit of deck maintenance to clear the hidden traps left behind by the winter freeze.
The Hidden Risk: The extreme freeze/thaw cycles of a Highlands winter cause your deck and dock boards to expand and contract violently. This process, known as frost heave, literally squeezes nails and screws right out of the wood. Right now, there are likely metal heads sitting a quarter-inch above the surface, just waiting to ruin someone's barefoot weekend.
The Task: Do the "Barefoot Check" today. Grab a hammer or your drill and walk slowly across your deck, dock, and wooden stairs. Look for the "poppers"—those fasteners that have worked their way loose. Tap the nails back down, or better yet, pull them out and replace them with slightly longer, coated deck screws so they don't pop again next year.
Save a toe, save a weekend! 🦶🔨✨
