The raven has long held a place of honour in folklore. In Norse mythology, Odin was
accompanied by Huginn (Thought) and Muninn (Memory), twin ravens who flew across
the world to bring back wisdom. In Celtic lore, they were sacred messengers connected
to the unseen realm, transformation, and deep protection.

Far from being mere birds of omen, ravens encourage us to look deeper, to trust our
intuition, embrace life’s mysteries, and uncover the hidden magic in the darkness.

Listen closely as the nights draw longer, he may just be guarding a spark of hidden holiday warmth yet to be revealed.

A little whisper of winter is on the horizon.

Today, I’m dropping a small clue for the next chapter in the Silk & Shadow collection, our official holiday scent created in collaboration with artist Holly Carr.

Can you guess what holiday magic awaits? Look closely. The full reveal and official launch happen on November 1st. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for a little festive enchantment.

Saint Lucia’s Day marks a festival of light that stretches deep into Scandinavian tradition. Long ago, on the darkest nights of the year, young maidens would wear crowns woven with evergreen branches and glowing candles to guide the way. The evergreen leaves symbolize everlasting life, while the glowing flames remind us that even in the deepest midwinter sleep, light is always returning.

Foraging is something I love to do at any time, but this fall is incredible because there are so many mushrooms. It’s like stepping through the looking glass into Alice’s
Wonderland.

For the past month I’ve been foraging for black trumpets (Craterellus cornucopioides) and despite their dark, mysterious appearance, they bring the most incredible, rich aroma to my kitchen.

They are such an interesting mushroom, so difficult to see because they look just like a leaf and blend in with the forest floor. In French, they are hauntingly named trompettes des morts - trumpets of the dead – because of the belief that they grew where spirits had passed through the forest. They were believed to sprout at midnight within fairy rings, making superstitious foragers hesitant to gather them despite their delicious
flavour.

Our soaps start in the garden. We infuse the oils with herbs and flowers we grow ourselves, then hand pour each batch in our Fall River studio and finish it with dried petals and herbs.

Every soap comes in its own box with artwork by a local artist, so they are just as nice to give as they are to keep for yourself.

October is here, and the garden is starting to slow down. We are cutting the last of the herbs to hang and dry, picking apples and rose hips, and getting ready for the first frost.

It is the month for staying in a little more, lighting a candle a little earlier each evening, and letting the season settle in.
