In 2027, for the first time in over 40 years, WCB employer rates are going down. Our WCB Nova Scotia partners have announced that the average employer rate will be reduced 15% to $2.25 per $100 of assessable payroll.

Mainland Building Trades Executive Director Alison Casey proudly took part in last week's WCB announcement, which is a direct correlation to healthier and safer workplaces and a driver for more opportunities for our skilled tradespeople. 🦺

With defence spending on the rise in Atlantic Canada, the Building Trades and our skilled tradespeople are primed to partner in building up and sustaining this nation’s military. We’re working to ensure our skilled labour plays a vital role in supporting Major Projects like the revitalization of the Canadian Armed Forces, which brings about growth, skilled job creation, and economic benefit to all Canadians.

Glad to sponsor today’s event hosted by the Atlantic Economic Council where we heard about opportunities for skilled trades as a result of Canada’s increased investment in defence.

Exceptional work is underway across the country when it comes to partnerships among Indigenous communities, governments, employers, and skilled trades training providers.

The Goal: Expand apprenticeship access, remove participation barriers, and ensure Indigenous workers share in the benefits of Canada’s infrastructure, energy, defence, and major project investments.

Together, this translates into 41 actionable commitments to complete by 2029, and Nova Scotia's Building Trades are proud to participate. Thanks to Canada's Building Trades Unions for taking the lead on this important effort.

CBTU’s Indigenous Reconciliation Action Plan (IRAP) sets out a clear, national framework to advance Indigenous participation, leadership, and economic opportunity across the unionized construction sector.

Developed with support from Mokwateh and engagement across the CBTU network, the plan outlines 41 actionable commitments to be completed by 2029.

Through 4 pillars, our actions are focused on expanding access to training and careers, strengthening relationships with Indigenous communities, increasing participation in procurement and major projects, and embedding accountability within our governance.

Our IRAP provides practical tools, measurable goals, and a roadmap for affiliates and partners to take action.
