Custom stone signage brings a sense of permanence to entrances, memorial gardens, cemeteries, churches, businesses, and public spaces.

The texture, depth, and natural character of engraved granite creates a presence that feels lasting and grounded.

At H&S, every piece is designed, engraved, and finished with careful attention to detail, from the first proof to final installation.

These memorials begin as natural granite boulders shaped by the Canadian landscape over thousands of years.

Many of the stones we work with come from Northern Ontario, where granite is known for its striking colour, rugged texture, and natural movement. Families are often drawn to these boulders because they feel connected to northern lakes, forests, rocky shorelines, and time spent outdoors.

We carefully work with the existing form of each stone to create a memorial that feels personal, lasting, and grounded in the natural beauty of the material itself.

Take a closer look at some of the unique colours, textures, and natural character found in these remarkable stones.

At this time of year, cemeteries across Toronto and southern Ontario begin accepting flat markers again.

Markers that have been completed will be delivered over the coming weeks, with cemetery teams handling the setting.

Timelines can vary depending on the cemetery, and placement may take some time after delivery.

We notify families once delivery has been completed and appreciate everyone’s patience while cemetery staff coordinate installations throughout the season.

A lot of our work comes down to getting the details right.

In these memorials, each element has been expertly carved or etched into the granite with precision and care, building up depth, texture, and clarity within the stone.

From fine linework to more defined carving, every part of the design is shaped to hold its form over time.

Swipe through to take a closer look at the detail in these unique memorials.

When designing a memorial, it’s worth thinking about how the space will be cared for over time.

Most cemeteries allow a small planting area in front of the monument, but not every family wants the responsibility of maintaining a garden.

In those cases, a granite slab can be added to create a clean, defined space that stays neat throughout the year. It also provides a place for lanterns, flowers, and personal items to be set with intention.

We found these beautiful hand-drawn memorial sketches in our archives, dating from 1975.

Each one was carefully created by hand, with colour, texture, and proportion all worked out on paper. These drawings would have moved through the family’s consultation and then into the workshop, guiding the work in stone.

Today, digital tools make the process faster and more flexible. But looking at these drawings, we feel a deep respect for the history and beauty of our craft.

After a long and brutal winter, installations are approached with extra care.

We work closely with the cemeteries we serve, making sure each placement respects their guidelines and the surrounding grounds.

With the ground still wet from snow, we’re beginning installations carefully, working where access allows without causing damage.

Our team takes the time to ensure each memorial is set properly and with respect for the space it rests in.

From the details in the design to the final installation, we take pride in getting things right.

Spring is beginning, and for many families this is when plans for memorials start to take shape.

In Hamilton, most cemeteries pour foundations between May and October. Once the ground freezes again later in the year, installations pause until the following spring.

Starting the process early allows time for design, production, and scheduling so the memorial is ready when installation season begins.

📖 For families planning a memorial in Hamilton, we’ve also created a practical guide covering local timelines, cemetery regulations, and the design process. You can read it on our blog.

We’ve recently added several new granite colours to our stock: Cashmere Pink, Tropical Green, and Viscount Grey.

Choosing the colour of granite is one of the more thoughtful parts of designing a memorial.

For many families, it’s important that the stone feels personal — something that reflects the individual being remembered as much as the inscription itself.

Because granite is a natural material, every piece carries its own pattern and variation. Having a wider selection allows families to take their time and find a stone that truly feels right.

If you’re exploring options for a memorial and would like guidance on colour and material, we’re always here to help.

During the inscription process, we’re often asked: “Is that paint?”

In fact, it’s a specialised product called lithochrome, developed specifically for granite memorials. Applied after carving, it bonds with the stone to enhance visibility without overpowering the inscription.

Some memorials require a brighter finish. Others need only a subtle coat to maintain contrast and help protect the carved letters from moisture.

This important step helps ensure the inscription remains clear and enduring for generations to come.
