Architecture is as much about the physical craft as it is about digital design.

This semester, we’re thrilled to have Jacob, a co-op student from the University of Waterloo, spearheading our latest physical models. He’s been taking the lead on our model-making process and helping us visualize complex site relationships for our upcoming projects. We love the energy and fresh perspective brought to our studio!

At Toms + McNally, we believe that getting our hands dirty with physical models leads to more thoughtful, grounded designs.

Building responsibly & sustainably isn’t a trend for us; it’s how we work.
From the high-performance design work at City View Park Pavilion (Net-Zero), Millgrove House (High performance envelope, Geothermal), and CityHousing Hamilton’ 55 Queenston* (PassiveHouse), to our project management roles on sustainable developments like 257 King William (Passive House), 1620 Main St (Passive House), and Oakwood Place (Passive House), our vision has remained consistent: build better, build sustainably, and build for the future.

We are proud to share that Partner Graham McNally obtained his Passive House certification just before the holidays. For us, this isn’t a pivot or a change in direction - it’s one more layer of expertise as we continue to manage and design projects that respect the environment and our community.

Thrilled to announce that our Westdale Theatre project was selected for the World Architecture Day celebration at Queen’s Park! We attended the event last week that was hosted by the OAA and M.P.P. Sandy Shaw, the event highlights outstanding projects from across Ontario. We’re so proud to have been part of restoring this Depression-era cinema, carefully preserving its historic character while creating a functional and accessible space for the community to enjoy for years to come.

Exciting news! Our project at 253 King William in Hamilton, for CityHousing Hamilton, has won a Canada Green Building Award from SABMag! We're incredibly proud to have served as Project Managers on this groundbreaking 24-unit affordable housing development.

This isn't just any building; it's the first Modular Passive House project in Hamilton, delivering much-needed homes for vulnerable residents. We helped CityHousing navigate everything from modular constructor selection and complex municipal approvals to an extensive window water testing review mid-construction, ensuring a safe, high-quality, and energy-efficient building. This award recognizes the immense effort and innovation that went into overcoming significant challenges. A huge thanks to the entire team and our partners for making this vision a reality!

At Toms + McNally Design, we're proud of our deep involvement in the transformative 55 Queenston Road project, a journey spanning over a decade. In 2014, the City of Hamilton engaged our team to breathe new life into the former City Motor Hotel site, transforming it from a site that posed considerable challenges to the neighbourhood into much-needed housing

We collaborated closely with the City's Planning Department, developing key urban design concepts and recommending future zoning for a vibrant mixed-use development. Our work, shaped by public engagement, laid the crucial groundwork for the site's revitalization.

Our initial vision truly began to materialize when CityHousing Hamilton acquired the site in 2017. By 2019, we partnered with Invizij Architects on the design of the first phase, creating sustainable, Passive House standard buildings with strategic views.1

The recent opening, attended by Aslam Rana, MP for Hamilton Centre, Mayor Andrea Horwath, Councilors Nrinder Nann (Ward 3) and Tammy Hwang (Ward 4), and the CEO of CityHousing Hamilton Adam Sweetland, marked a significant milestone. We are thrilled to have played such a pivotal role from the project's inception to its successful realization.
