What is that smell???

Since household drains are designed to flush away water and waste and also to prevent gases from the sewer from entering your home, it’s no surprise that sometimes they release bad odors. For serious odor problems in your home, you may require drain cleaning services. For most occurrences however, there are some simple home remedies you can try.
Your garbage disposal grinds up food into particles that are easily flushed through your drain system. Sometimes, food particles can get stuck in the mechanism and cause terrible odors. One of the best ways to naturally deodorize your garbage disposal is to toss in some citrus peel and allow it to grind thoroughly and rinse through the system. The added bonus is the citrus will help remove grease from the disposal and leave behind a pleasant scent.
To freshen up any sink drain, there is no need to invest in expensive cleaners that may cause damage to your pipes. Simply pour one cup of baking soda into the drain you wish to deodorize and allow it to sit for about half an hour. Boil a kettle of water and at the end of the half hour, slowly pour the water down the drain to flush away the baking soda. Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and combined with the boiling water, will also help clean attached pipes.
While the above methods will help remove odors that come from your drains, you can try to prevent odors from forming with a bit of extra care when using your sink or shower. Hair is a major cause of odor problems as it builds up in the drain and traps other particles. Using a strainer over the drains where you wash your hair will prevent this from happening.
For particularly bad odor problems or if you have slow drains that are contributing to the problem, contact John the Plumber for expert drain cleaning services in Hamilton.

Here are some tips to prevent clogged pipes from the plumbing specialists at John the Plumber Hamilton. Everyone has experienced a slow or clogged drain at some point. We can all agree it is not a fun situation be in. One of the best ways to prevent a slow or clogged drain is to be careful about what you put in it. After all, preventative maintenance will save you a lot of cash in the long run. That’s great and all but life is full of surprises and even you haven’t put anything in the drain to cause a clog, an adventurous little one might have. Something may have gotten past you, or you may have figured it is small enough to pass right through.

Some of these items include soap scum, hair, coffee grounds, and cooking grease. Hair is an obvious no-no, but the others can easily end up in your drain (especially soap scum) without you even thinking twice about it. Here are a few simple steps to keep your drains free and clear of any debris.

Coffee grounds should be thrown into the trash. They could also go into the mulch pile if you have one in your home.
Cooking grease should be disposed of in the trash. Save a milk carton and fill it with the used oil, then dispose.
Use a screen or drain-gate to keep unwanted items out of your pipes. You can go to any plumbing supply store to find what you need. You may want to take along a picture of the set up so it will be easier to find exactly what you need. Most can just be laid in place (no installation required).
Running hot water down the drain after each use. The hot water keeps the grease and oils from your foods going down the drain. This aids in keeping any grease from building up in the pipes and causing blockages.
Pour 1 cup of vinegar down the drain and let it sit for thirty minutes; then follow up with very hot water. Vinegar is a powerful organic cleaning agent. The vinegar does a great job of removing any built up organic matter in the pipes.
Put a cup of baking soda down the drain and follow up with hot water. Baking soda is a great cleaning agent and odor absorbent. Not only will it clean the pipes, it will also freshen things up a bit.
Keeping things running as they should is a great way to save a few dollars. By using the tips listed above your drains should always stay squeaky clean. Preventative maintenance is the best way to avoid plumbing problems, but things happen that are out of your control. When they do, call John the Plumber Hamilton. Don’t wait until the last possible moment to call a professional. Problems don’t usually go away when you ignore them, they get worse.

Be careful of what you put in your drains, and have regular inspections to keep things running as they should. Give the friendly plumber a call at John the Plumber (905) 645-0467 for all your plumbing needs!

Big piles of snow around the building cause basement floods around your foundation on winters such as this one can be a problem. Every spring when the snow is melting, our plumbing technicians see many people with flooded basements. When the weather warms up, the big piles of snow that accumulates around our homes each year, begin to melt. When we’ve had a winter with heavy snow fall, every good plumbing expert will advise you to remove the snow that is directly around your foundation.

Shovelling our driveways, walkways, and paths is bad enough, but any plumber worth his weight will tell you that removing the snow around your foundation is a must before the big melt. John The Plumber says that if you leave all that snow up against your foundation, and it rains during early spring, you’re likely to be looking at a basement flood. The added water volume that the warm rain adds to the already melting snow is often too much for our weeping tile systems to handle.

Your submersible sump pump should be in top working condition. Test your sump pump each winter to make sure it isn’t in need of a plumbing repair. A sump pump repair or servicing can go a long way to preventing your basement from having a flood. Battery back up sump pumps are also a great way to ensure you don’t have any power failure flooding. If you live in the country, and the power goes out for a few hours, you’re going to be in big trouble if you don’t have a battery backup during the snow melt.

A small plumbing repair can save you thousands, along with major headaches. If you enjoy your spare time, you certainly don’t want to be spending it with insurance companies, getting quotes, and dealing with the sounds of fans and dehumidifiers. Not to mention a major construction project happening in your home.

We happen to think that we’re the top notch service plumber in town. Our aim is to help you avoid big problems before they happen.
