New Invasive Species: Hydrilla Found in Ontario

For the first time, the invasive aquatic plant Hydrilla has been detected in Canada at the West Cell of Hillman Marsh Conservation Area in Leamington, Ontario.

Hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata) can grow up to 2.5 cm per day and reach lengths of 7.5 meters! This fast-growing plant chokes out native species, clogs water intake pipes, jams boat motors, and hinders recreational activities like swimming and paddling. Hydrilla is a prohibited invasive species under Ontarioโ€™s Invasive Species Act (2015).

For more information on how to report and prevent invasive species please visit the Invasive Species Centre website:

Don't miss out on our Introduction to Woody Invasive Plants! This virtual webinar will take place in NEXT WEEK!

A number of woody invasives threaten Ontarioโ€™s environment, economy and society. These are plants that are introduced to areas outside of their natural range, typically via human activity. Once established, they can outcompete native plants, degrade wildlife habitat, impact species at risk, impede access to recreational activities and impact human health and safety.

This 1.5 hr VIRTUAL session will cover the biology, life cycle, habitat, pathways of spread and impacts of several invasive woody plants.

This webinar will take place on July 18th, 2024 12pm - 1:30pm EST

Happy National Bee Day! ๐Ÿ Today, weโ€™re highlighting the Native Ontario Sweat Bee, a key pollinator in our ecosystem. These small but mighty bees can travel up to 2 kilometers from their nest in search of nectar and pollen. By planting native flowers and avoiding pesticides, we can help protect these vital insects. Letโ€™s work together to create bee-friendly spaces.
