As many of you know I started McVicar Electric not long after moving back home to NB in 2020. It gave me the freedom to keep my skills fresh while we settled our family into the province. Once settled I sought out full time employment and found my self at Homestar Inc , a well known contractor here in the valley.

It’s been a whirlwind 2021/2022 winding down McVicar Electric and really diving in and giving my all to the opportunities and potential I saw at Homestar. I’m happy to announce we’re kicking off 2023 strong with the launch of Maverick Electrical our break out electrical company in the Homestar Group.

Up to half of your electrical bill every month can be lighting. It's the first thing we turn on and the last thing we turn off everyday. We cook by it, read by it, eat by it and this can add up fast if you're still using incandescent bulbs.

Hundreds of thousands of homes in North America still have old FPE Stab Lok breakers. These breakers were common in homes built between 1960 and 1985 and became the focus of several investigations. In reports to the Consumer Product Safety Commission during investigations, it was found during testing up to 51 percent of breakers tested failed to trip at the set amperage.

Despite these investigations and even the parent company, Reliance Electric Co, acknowledging a possible defect no recalls were ever made. The product simply stopped being made under the FPE name and the controversy faded from knowledge for the everyday home owner.

These breakers pose a serious fire risk. If you suspect these breakers are installed in your home it is strongly recommended to reach out to your local electrician and have them replaced.

Did You Know?

Since 2009, Canadian Electrical Code has required receptacles in new homes to be Tamper Resistant (TR). These are receptacles with built in shutters specifically designed to allow a plug to be pressed in but to stop children from poking foreign objects in and getting electrocuted. They have drastically reduced the number of serious electrical injuries in young children.

These plugs are far superior to the plastic plug in guards of old that many a child, myself included 🤦‍♂️, managed to pull out and shock themselves.

Luckily this is also an easy upgrade to any older home! Often taking less than a day to upgrade. If you have older plugs and kids or grandchildren around considering upgrading today.
