We build our own solid-wood jambs, machine our slab doors to fit, and choose ball-bearing hinges for smooth, reliable operation.

For this basement, that also means modifying each door to properly fit the existing opening heights.

Homeowners shouldn’t have to think about these details. Doors should fit properly, work smoothly and keep working long after we’re all gone.

A small change in the shop can make a big difference on the job.

Jude and I upgraded our jointer from straight knives to a Byrd helical cutterhead.

Most homeowners will never need to know the difference.

What matters is what it does: less tear-out, fewer unnecessary passes through the machines, less wasted lumber and less time getting material ready.

It’s quieter too, which nobody in the shop is complaining about.

Better process. Less waste. Better results.

Now the work behind the walls starts to show.

After all the framing, waterproofing and preparation, we’re finally setting tile in this basement shower.

This is where all those earlier decisions start coming together—and the homeowner gets to see their new space take shape.

Old wood doesn’t need to look new to have a new purpose.

These barn boards were left over from a home built using material from a historic barn. We’re giving what’s left another life as an outdoor patio table.

The worm holes, checks and cracks are part of the story, so rather than hiding them, we’re preserving them with clear epoxy.

Timmy came by to handle the pour and help us get these boards ready for what comes next.

For this project, we built every door jamb from rough lumber instead of using pre-manufactured stock. It gave us complete control over the material and every step that followed.

Watching Jude work through the process is a reminder that quality isn’t created by one machine. It’s built one decision at a time.

Great craftsmanship is passed down, not handed over.

Every finished piece starts with understanding the material.

This project gave Jude another opportunity to learn what can’t be taught from a book, how to read the grain, understand how wood behaves, and why every step in the milling process matters.

Those lessons aren’t learned in a day. They’re passed from one generation to the next, one board at a time.

Every replacement piece for this heritage porch was built, sanded, primed, and painted in our shop before installation.

Alisha and Jude tackled the larger pieces while Olivia made sure even the smallest details were covered.
