Two Texas teens just won big at the world's largest pre-college science fair for an invention that could help clean up one of today's biggest pollution problems.

Victoria Ou and Justin Huang, both 17 and students at College Park High School in The Woodlands, took home the $50,000 Gordon E. Moore Award at the 2024 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles. Their creation: a pen-sized device that uses ultrasonic sound waves to filter microplastics out of water.

In lab testing, the device removed between 84% and 94% of microplastics in a single pass, working across common plastic types like polyurethane, polystyrene, and polyethylene. The teens say they were inspired by a visit to a water treatment plant and hope their invention can eventually be used at treatment facilities worldwide.

They also picked up a separate $5,000 award for Earth and Environmental Sciences.
