Project milestone in Behchokǫ̀ 🚛🏠

Five new modular housing units have now arrived in the community after being manufactured in Hay River and transported north for on-site assembly.

This project included moving a full three-bedroom home up the highway from Hay River, across both the Deh Cho Bridge and the Frank Channel Bridge, before arriving in the community of Rae on Saturday, April 18.

Modular construction helps shorten timelines, manage costs, and deliver durable homes built for northern conditions.

Extremely thankful for the continued opportunities to share and highlight our programs and people right in Hay River and the Northwest Territories. We look forward to continuing to create opportunities for those in the communities we are proud and privileged to serve!

On January 19, we had the privilege of welcoming Rebecca Alty, MP for the Northwest Territories and Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, to the Metcan Building Solutions site in Hay River, NT.

Our Metcan General Manager Niki Elliot provided a tour of the facility and shared the incredible work we’re doing in partnership with Housing NWT, local communities, and Indigenous governments to deliver homes built right here in the North.

We also explored opportunities to train Indigenous Peoples and Northerners for skilled trades and discussed ways to modernize our facility to meet future housing needs.

Units are on the move!

Housing NWT is working with METCAN Building Solutions to deliver a seniors’ duplex in Tulı́tʼa. The modular units are community-bound on the winter road, stay tuned for an update when they are fully installed!

Tulı́tʼa is one of 5 communities receiving new seniors’ duplexes. The other 4 duplexes have been delivered to Teetłʼit Zheh (Fort McPherson), Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ (Fort Simpson), Denı́nu Kų́ę́ (Fort Resolution) and Behchokǫ̀.

Housing NWT is proud to announce the successful completion and delivery of a seniors' duplex in Fort Resolution.

The energy-efficient units were built by METCAN Building Solutions in Hay River and designed with input from the community’s Senior Advisory Committee. This input resulted in design enhancements that will help elders age in place with dignity.

Features of the duplex include:
✅ Built low to the ground to eliminate the need for an exterior ramp.
✅ A barrier-free kitchen with additional counter and storage space, including space for a large freezer.
✅ An exterior gravel pad for a teepee, smokehouse, shed, or other outbuilding.
✅ Triple-glazed windows.
✅ High insulation values in the walls, floors, and roof.
✅ An air-tight building assembly.

This duplex is an example of Housing NWT's dedication to meeting the housing needs of elders throughout the Northwest Territories.

Tenants are expected to move in late Spring 2025.
