Have you ever gotten mad at AI? 🤖😂

We rely on AI more and more every day—for answers, advice, ideas, calculations… pretty much everything.

But here’s the problem:

AI isn’t always right.

Sometimes it gives you an answer with complete confidence… and the answer is completely wrong. 😅

You get frustrated.
You question why you even use it.
You swear you’re done with AI.

"That’s it. I’m deleting this thing."

10 minutes later…

"Hey ChatGPT, quick question…"* 🤦‍♂️😂

And I think that might be the funniest part about our relationship with AI.

We know it can be wrong.
We know we shouldn’t blindly trust it.

Yet somehow…

we always come back. 😂🤖

Sometimes the client has a specific look in mind. 🌿✂️

For this property, the goal was a tighter, more manicured appearance, so we shaped several established plants to match the client’s vision:

🌿 Smokebush — reduction and shaping
🌲 Pine — carefully hand-sheared
🌳 Weeping birch — shaping and cleanup
🌱 Ginkgo biloba — shaping
🌿 Barberry — shaping

Most of the shaping was completed using our Milwaukee M18 extendable hedge trimmer, while the pine was hand-sheared for greater control.

From a horticultural perspective, selective pruning is generally our preferred approach when maintaining natural structure and plant form. In this case, however, the client wanted a more formal, tightly maintained appearance — and our job was to bring that vision to life.

Every landscape is different, and good horticulture is also about understanding the desired outcome and choosing the right approach for the property.

🌿 Why do plants wilt? 🌿
Plant wilt doesn't always mean the plant needs more water.
There are two common reasons a plant will wilt:
💧 1. The soil is too dry.
When there isn't enough moisture in the soil, the roots can't absorb the water the plant needs. Water normally travels up the xylem to the leaves, where it exits through the stomata during transpiration.
☀️ 2. The soil is moist, but the weather is too hot, dry, or windy.
Sometimes the plant is losing water through its leaves faster than the roots can replace it. Even with damp soil, temporary wilting can happen during extreme heat.
Knowing the difference can help prevent overwatering and keep your landscape healthy all season long!

💧 Irrigation Repair | Built Better From the Ground Up 🌱
Sometimes a small irrigation leak reveals a much bigger issue.
While repairing a cracked PVC T on this irrigation manifold, we discovered the system needed more than just a quick fix. After further investigation, we found that the existing pipe was Series 200 PVC and needed to be upgraded to Schedule 40 PVC starting right from the access point.
Instead of replacing one broken piece, we rebuilt the manifold properly for long-term reliability.
The rebuild included: ✅ Schedule 40 PVC conversion
✅ New elbow connections
✅ Ball valve shutoff
✅ Threaded blowout access point
✅ Blowout valve installation
✅ Check valve protection
✅ Rebuilt manifold connections
✅ Reconnected all irrigation zone valves
A properly built irrigation system isn’t just about getting water from point A to point B — it’s about designing it for serviceability, durability, and years of dependable performance.

🎬 Behind the scenes at Keitz Landscape 🌿
Not every day is big installs and finished gardens — sometimes it’s the work that keeps everything moving.
Today started at the compound getting the trucks turned around and ready to roll, loading debris, cleaning things up with some weeding and transplanting, then heading out for a dump run. After that: fuel up and prep the trucks for another day ahead.
Wrapped it up with a quick goodbye to the yard 👋 and finished the day back at home handling the office side of the business.
A lot goes on behind the scenes to keep an eco-conscious landscape company running — and every little task adds up 🌎🌱

Swedish Columnar Aspen Diagnosis 🌳
Today on site I’m diagnosing declining columnar aspens and replacing one that had fully failed.
Early signs included cupped leaves, dieback, and uneven growth—but the real issue became clear after digging in: the tree was planted too deep.
The root flare was completely buried, restricting oxygen exchange and disrupting the vascular system (xylem & phloem). Over time, this led to severe decline and internal decay.
Key reminder: always expose the root flare and avoid burying the trunk. Planting depth is critical for long-term tree health.
Installed corrections included proper flare exposure, improved mulch placement, and temporary wind support.

Pagoda Dogwood Replacement & Root Preparation

The removal of the old pagoda dogwood went smoothly with no issues. The real work came with preparing the replacement tree for proper planting.
The new pagoda dogwood from the nursery had a noticeably higher soil line than what the final planting depth required. Before installation, we corrected the root structure by adjusting and treating the root zone to ensure the root flare was properly exposed and ready for long-term establishment.
Getting the root structure right at planting makes all the difference in how the tree performs over time.

🌿 Another great project completed! 🌿
A big shout-out to BND Landscape and Brianne Davis for trusting us with this subcontracted project.
Our team tackled a variety of landscape maintenance and pruning tasks, including:
✅ Reducing an overgrown mahonia hedge to approximately 3 feet in height
✅ Line trimming and cleanup throughout the property
✅ Shaping Saskatoon bushes for a cleaner, more refined appearance
✅ Canopy reduction on a large walnut tree by approximately one-third
✅ Significant reduction and lifting of Siberian elm growth to improve structure and clearance
✅ Debris removal and detailed cleanup throughout the site
✅ Selective hedge pruning to create a more consistent and symmetrical appearance while preserving the natural character of individual plants
It's always rewarding to transform an overgrown landscape into a clean, well-maintained space while keeping the health and long-term structure of the plants in mind.

🌿 A Final Garden Walk Through a Special Landscape 🌿
Today was likely my last visit to this incredible garden, as the homeowners have moved on to their next chapter. Before leaving, I took one final walk through the property to appreciate the collection of plants, trees, and years of careful stewardship that made this landscape truly unique.
From sargentia hydrangeas, witch hazel, pagoda dogwood, and Korean lilacs to grafted fruit trees, Dawn redwood, ginkgo, tree peonies, and the stunning linear-leaf buckthorn hedge, every corner offered something special. The garden blended ornamental beauty with edible harvests, featuring peaches, raspberries, vegetables, and multi-grafted fruit trees, all woven into a thoughtfully designed landscape.
This property may be modest in size, but it showcases how plant selection, proper pruning, and attention to detail can create a truly high-end garden experience. It's always rewarding to care for landscapes that are filled with character, rarity, and seasonal interest.
