An old coal-access hatch, reimagined!

We're exploring five design concepts to transform an existing exterior basement stairwell into a fully enclosed, weather-protected entrance.

The challenge? Creating something functional and thoughtfully designed while respecting the architectural character of this beautiful historic stone home.

Each option takes a slightly different approach to the roofline, windows, and exterior detailing, with the same goal of making the new addition feel like a natural extension of the original building.

A little behind-the-scenes look at what goes into a building permit drawing set!

This cottage project included documenting existing conditions, redesigning the deck, adding an accessibility ramp, and planning a small sunroom extension.

We always try to source furniture thoughtfully, starting with quality pieces from locally owned vintage and second-hand shops. If we can’t find the right piece, our next choice is to have it made locally.

When neither is the right fit, we source through a carefully selected group of brands we genuinely love, many of which offer exclusive trade pricing that we can extend to our design clients.

Whenever possible, we prioritize Canadian companies, quality craftsmanship, natural materials, responsible manufacturing, and pieces designed to last.

Many renovation challenges don’t actually come from the construction itself — they come from what happens before it begins.

When there isn’t a clear design phase, decisions often get made on the fly, which can lead to change orders, delays, confusion on site, and costs that weren’t originally planned for.

A well-developed design process helps bring clarity early — so everyone involved in the project is working from the same plan, with fewer unknowns along the way.

It’s not just about design for aesthetics — it’s about setting the foundation for a smoother, more predictable build.
