Her teacher killed her pet in 1997. She spent the next 29 years believing she did it.

Her husband found that out in the toy aisle at Target, where his 38 year old wife was crying over a $20 plastic egg.

It was a Tamagotchi, the reissue of the one from the 90s. She hung it back on the hook, wiped her face, and said, "Sorry. Long day." They bought paper towels and went home.

In the car, she told him why. He had not asked her anything. She just started talking, the way people do when they are looking out a window instead of at you.

She got her first Tamagotchi for Christmas in 1997. She was 9, and she kept it alive for 23 days. She fed it before school and cleaned up after it at recess. Every night she turned its light off before her own. Then on a Friday her teacher heard it beeping inside her desk and locked it in a drawer until Monday.

The original Tamagotchi could die in less than half a day if nobody touched it. Hers spent the whole weekend in that drawer.

On Monday the teacher handed it back. The screen showed a tiny angel floating in the stars. She cried at her desk, and the teacher told the class it was only a toy. When she got home, her mother said, "And this is exactly why we cannot get you a real dog."

"That was the day I found out I ruin things," she told him. Then she turned the radio up and changed the subject.

He did not say a word for the rest of the drive. Their whole marriage was rearranging itself in his head.

For 6 years she had said no to a dog. "I am not a dog person." When her sister asked her to watch a goldfish for one week, she said no so fast that her sister got offended. Every plant anybody gave her went to a coworker within a month, before it had the chance to die on her.

And he had believed her. When she said "I kill everything," he nodded. There was one pothos that survived their move, and he watered it behind her back so she would never have to watch it go. He thought he was protecting her. Every time he did it, he was agreeing with a 4th grade teacher.

Here is what a 9 year old could not have known. A lot of neurodivergent kids lose track of anything they cannot see. Out of sight really is out of mind for them. So when something goes wrong, they assume the forgetting caused it, because forgetting is what they have been getting in trouble for their whole lives. She had spent 29 years believing she killed something that died in a locked drawer while an adult held the key.

There is also a detail about the 1997 Tamagotchi most kids never learned. It had a pause. If you went into the clock settings, time stopped for it. The hearts stayed full and nothing pooped. Nothing could die. Nobody ever told her.

He did not argue with her about any of it. You cannot talk somebody out of a 29 year old belief over dinner. He went back to that Target, bought the egg, and set it on her nightstand with a note.

"We are raising this one together. You will never be the only one keeping it alive."

Then he built the system around her. She had it in the mornings and he had it at night. And every time she left for a 12 hour shift, he paused it before she walked out the door. He never mentioned that part.

On day 19 she called him from the hospital break room, panicking. She had left it on the kitchen counter, and it had been alone for 9 hours. She was already apologizing.

"It is fine," he said. "I paused it at 6:15 this morning. I do it every shift."

She did not say anything for a long time. Then she asked him a question in a voice he had never heard her use.

"There was a pause?"

"There was always a pause," he said. "Nobody told you."

She finished that shift, came home, picked up the egg, and held it in both hands at the counter like she was checking it for a pulse. Then she set it down, walked over to the window, and watered the pothos herself.

The Tamagotchi lives on her nightstand next to her badge. In March they went to the shelter to just look. She walked past every puppy in the building and picked a 6 year old mutt who had been there for 200 days. She filled out the paperwork herself.

She named him Pause.

If the woman you love says she kills everything, find out who had the drawer.

The Dom's Playbook is the book I wrote for men like him, men who want to build the kind of structure where she is never the only one keeping things alive.
