When an industrial site closes, what happens to everything left behind? Structures. Hazardous materials. Buried debris. Contaminated soil. Waste. Ponds and lagoons. Each one needs to be assessed, removed, cleaned up or restored properly.

That’s decommissioning and reclamation. Milestone manages the full process, from demolition and hazardous-material removal to soil cleanup, waste disposal, materials recovery and habitat restoration.

We work on industrial sites, mines, landfills and development properties, creating a practical plan for each site and managing the work safely from start to finish.

100,000 tonnes of contaminated soil. That's where the project started. What it became was something much bigger. Working alongside Decontie Milestone Inc., our team helped transform the former industrial lands surrounding Chaudière Falls as part of the landmark Zibi redevelopment in Ottawa, ON and Gatineau, QC. Along the way, the project created training and employment opportunities for the Algonquin-Anishinabe community while remediating more than 100,000 tonnes of contaminated soil.

Remediation was only part of the outcome. Building capacity, creating opportunities, and helping prepare the site for its next chapter were just as important.

See what went into making it happen.

Decontie Milestone Inc. a joint venture formed by Decontie Construction Inc. and Milestone, was contracted as the Algonquin liaison general contractor for a unique and world class redevelopment project.

Five industrial lagoons. One Canadian winter. At a former calcium chloride manufacturing site in Amherstburg, Ontario, our team decommissioned five lagoons, stabilized and managed thousands of cubic metres of sludge, excavated 65,000 cubic metres of clay berm material, and restored the site, all while navigating winter weather, excess water, and challenging site access.

It's the kind of project that proves planning is just as important as ex*****on.

See what it took.

20,000 plants. Not for a park. For a wastewater treatment system. Working alongside Tsawwassen First Nation, our team helped bring a constructed wetland to life using more than 20,000 locally native plants, creating habitat while naturally polishing reclaimed water before it's returned to the marine environment.

But the project didn't end when the last plant went in. A two-year monitoring program created jobs and apprenticeship opportunities for Tsawwassen First Nation community members, while a 10-year succession plan was developed to support the wetland's long-term health and the community's future.

Because the best restoration projects keep growing long after construction ends.

See the full story.

Milestone with Matcon Civil Constructors undertook a design-build project for the Tsawwassen First Nation to complete a constructed wetland.

Over 50% cost savings. That's what happens when you design the solution before you build it. For this project in Kingston, Ontario, our team carried out bench-scale testing to determine the best treatment approach before designing and implementing a Permeable Reactive Barrier (PRB) - an underground system that treats contaminated groundwater as it naturally flows through the site.

The result was a solution tailored to the site's unique conditions that met the remediation objectives while reducing the original estimated contract value by more than 50%.

Good remediation starts long before construction.

Take a look at how it came together.
