Last night I was up late, finally got to bed, and at 3:00 AM the phone rings.

Blocked drain. Fair enough—that’s what on-call service is for.

I explain the after-hours rate, and suddenly the emergency isn’t so urgent anymore.

I didn’t even make it out the door.

As a business owner, this is the stuff that makes you question whether offering 24/7 service is even worth it. You sacrifice sleep, family time, and your own health just to be available, only to get price shopped at three in the morning.

I’m genuinely curious.

Business owners and tradesmen: Is offering on-call service still worth it, or have you thought about getting rid of it altogether?

Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments.

So apparently I’m supposed to have an opinion on politics now…

Listen, I’m just a plumber. I’m here to fix leaks, not the economy. 😂

Today’s video is a simple carburetor install using a customer-supplied unit, and honestly, if you’re reasonably handy, this is one of those jobs you can tackle yourself with a few basic tools and a little patience.

Not every repair needs a service call, and we’re happy to show you the process.

That said… if halfway through the job your driveway turns into a parts graveyard and you’re holding three mystery springs wondering where they came from, give us a call. We’ll get you back up and running without judging you. (Okay… maybe just a little.)

Sometimes the best service we can provide is giving people the confidence to do simple jobs themselves.

Apparently this raccoon thought it had found the nicest Airbnb in Lethbridge.

For months the homeowner thought they were hearing birds in the chimney… turns out they had a furry little tenant living rent-free on the smoke shelf and treating the fireplace like a luxury condo.

Ryan from First Diver made sure our uninvited guest had officially moved out, secured the chimney until we could return, and then we installed a brand-new chimney cap so no future woodland squatters could move in.

After that, we swept the chimney, cleaned up the raccoon mess (yes… including the p**p 🤢), and got everything safe and ready to use again.

Not every hero wears a cape. Some wear coveralls and shovel raccoon p**p for a living.

If you’ve been hearing strange noises in your chimney, don’t ignore it. Give Soot N’ Sewer a call before your fireplace becomes the hottest new wildlife resort in Southern Alberta.

Think your tankless water heater is “maintenance free?” Think again.

The water you see at the beginning of this video came straight out of a customer’s tankless during a routine flush. Years of mineral buildup and scale can reduce efficiency, shorten the life of your unit, and leave you paying more to heat your water.

A simple annual flush helps keep your system running efficiently, extends its lifespan, and can save you thousands in premature replacement costs.

If you live in Lethbridge or anywhere in Southern Alberta and your tankless hasn’t been serviced in over a year, now’s the time.

Give Soot N’ Sewer a call and let our licensed plumbers keep your investment running like new.

📞 Book your tankless flush today before buildup turns into a costly repair.

Every plumber has come across one of these once in a while.

We were doing an inspection and found a 50-year-old water heater still standing. No leaks, still heating water, and somehow still doing its job after half a century.

Part of me wants to tip my hat to the craftsmanship. The other part of me knows that when these finally let go, they can leave behind thousands of dollars in water damage.

So here’s the question:

If this was your customer’s house, would you recommend replacing it proactively, or would you tell them to ride it out until it fails?

There’s no shortage of opinions on this one, and I’m curious where the trades stand.

Ran into an interesting one today.

The sump pit was taking on groundwater like you’d expect, but the cavity around the backwater valve under the bathtub was filling up even faster. Every couple of minutes there was more water coming in, and it definitely wasn’t coming from a plumbing leak.

My recommendation was exterior drainage and weeping tile to deal with the groundwater issue, but I’m curious what the rest of the plumbing world would do.

If this was your service call, what’s your next move? Interior drainage? Exterior excavation? Foundation specialist? Something else?

I’m genuinely interested to hear how you’d tackle it.

Not every plumbing video has to be about calling out bad work.

Today we showed up for a routine tankless water heater flush and found one of the cleanest mechanical rooms we’ve seen in a long time. A beautifully organized water distribution manifold, individual shutoffs, and even gallon-per-minute flow meters on every cold water branch. Whoever took the time to build this system cared about craftsmanship, serviceability, and making life easier for the next plumber.

In the trades, we spend a lot of time pointing out mistakes, but it’s just as important to recognize excellence when we see it.

To the plumber who installed this: well done. 👏

Sometimes the best compliment another tradesman can give is simply, “I’d be proud to put my name on that.”
