It’s Emerald Ash Borer Awareness Week until May 23rd, promoted by the Don’t Move Firewood campaign — a reminder that one small action can make a big difference for urban and natural forests.
The emerald ash borer, or EAB, is an invasive insect that attacks and kills ash trees. It has already caused major damage across North America, impacting forests, wetlands, city trees, wildlife habitat, and culturally important species like black ash.
And while EAB may already be present in many areas, it’s still spreading.
One of the biggest ways it moves? Firewood.
EAB larvae can hide beneath the bark, meaning that from the outside, infested firewood may look completely normal. When firewood is moved to a new campground, cottage, backyard, or community, invasive insects can come along for the ride.
This week, take a moment to learn more about EAB, its impacts, and how we can all help slow its spread by checking out the EAB Awareness Week webinars hosted through the Don’t Move Firewood campaign:

And remember:
Buy local. Burn local. Don’t move firewood.
