Where you put your thermostat matters. It seems like a small detail, but where it’s placed can affect how accurately it reads the temperature of your home.

Ideally, a thermostat should be installed in a central interior location where it can get a good sense of the average temperature throughout the home.

What should you avoid?

• Close to a window
• Exterior walls that may be warmer or colder than the rest of the home
• Near exterior doors or other drafty areas
• Too close to supply vents or other heating and cooling sources
• Kitchens or areas where appliances can create extra heat
• Tucked into an area with very little airflow

If the thermostat is constantly being influenced by sun, drafts or another heat source, it may think your home is warmer or cooler than it actually is and tell your HVAC system to respond accordingly.

It’s a small detail, but these are exactly the kinds of decisions worth thinking about during the design and build process.
