Mayflies are back in Southern Alberta — but don’t panic! While large swarms can be surprising, mayflies are not typically considered a pest problem. They don’t bite, sting, spread disease, or damage homes. In fact, their appearance is often a sign of a healthy aquatic ecosystem.
That said, their attraction to lights can lead to large numbers gathering around homes, especially near water sources. While it’s difficult to prevent mayflies entirely, there are a few ways to reduce how many end up around your property:
✔️ Replace mercury-v***r lights with high-pressure sodium v***r lighting
✔️ Swap bright white bulbs for yellow-tinted bulbs outdoors
✔️ Ensure doors and windows have secure, intact screens
✔️ Seal cracks and gaps that may allow insects inside
Mayfly season is short-lived, and in most cases, they’ll disappear as quickly as they arrived. If you’re unsure whether you’re dealing with mayflies or another insect issue, we’re always happy to help identify what you’re seeing.
