Wood or gas? It's one of the questions we get asked the most.

There's two main reasons people burn wood. Some do it out of financial necessity compared to electric, oil, or propane. Others just love the ambiance and the whole process of building a fire and enjoying it.

Gas has its own advantages. You can set a thermostat and walk away. A wood burner is all or nothing. Gas units also run without electricity, so if you're on vacation in the winter and the hydro goes out or your furnace dies, your fireplace will still toggle on and keep your pipes from freezing.

Venting is more flexible with gas too. Depending on the scenario, it can vent right out the side of the house, while a wood chimney has to run up through the home and well past the peak of the roof.

Gas also gives you more finishing options. You can surround it with wood materials, whereas a wood burning fireplace limits you to stone, tile, and noncombustible products.

A house sells with a wood burning fireplace right there in the listing. The deal closes. Then the new owner finds out the thing isn't insurable.

We've seen it happen plenty of times.

WETT stands for Wood Energy Technical Training. I get hired by insurance companies, homeowners and real estate agents to inspect wood burning appliances and determine whether they're code compliant.

On real estate deals we work with both sides. Sellers usually want to know what cards are in their deck before the house goes on the market. Buyers are checking whether the fireplace is going to cost them coverage after closing.

Insurance companies are asking the same question. They're putting a policy on the property and they need to know the fireplace isn't what burns it down.

Three main categories of fireplace, and each one fits a different situation.

A standalone unit sits out in the room and throws heat 360 degrees. No fans or blowers pushing air around to warm the space.

Zero clearance is the built in option. It gets set into the room, framed around, and the chimney goes in after. The finishing is where people have fun with it. Stone, drywall, wood mantels, shiplap. Your imagination is the only limiting factor.

An insert goes into an existing open wood burning fireplace and vents through the chimney. An open fireplace gives you ambiance more than heat. An insert takes that cold, inefficient opening and turns it into a heating powerhouse.
