Two words from Tom Skerritt have stayed with Dan Brown for decades: “Treat yourself.”

In his latest pop-culture column, Dan recalls interviewing the Alien star and Star Trek’s Walter Koenig. From a warmly offered movie recommendation to a spirited defence of fan films, these conversations left a lasting impression.

Read why Dan would rather interview a character actor than an A-list superstar:

A Canadian priest, larger-than-life legends, and an ending that gave Dan Brown a shiver.

Donald Calabrese’s graphic novel Coady follows Moses Coady’s efforts to help struggling Nova Scotia communities and a modern-day researcher trying to separate the man from the myths.

In his latest review, Dan explores this blend of Canadian history and magic realism, with a surprising turn that reminded him of Twin Peaks.

“Based on a true story.” Five words Hollywood loves. But why do they make us more interested in a movie?

In his latest column, Dan Brown explores how our appetite for authenticity helps sell everything from political dramas to haunted-house horror. From All the President’s Men to The Amityville Horror, the promise that “this really happened” packs a powerful marketing punch.

Does knowing a movie is based on real events make you more likely to watch it?
