Everyone should have their own personal tropical getaway at home. This room has basically received the equivalent of a spa retreat and once the flooring goes down, freshly painted baseboards will be installed, filled, caulked and painted one more time. This room will be relaxed for years to come.

Wallpaper is from a UK manufacturer called Graham and Brown and is absolutely gorgeous to the touch and of course the colours and mural or pattern. As many painters will say, wallpaper is a luxury item. Sometimes though, you probably deserve some luxury in your home. A thanks to yourself for working hard, raising children, being involved in your community, whatever it is, you deserve it.

Switch it up folks. Everyone wants change. At least that’s what all the election signs are telling me. 😀

Some great colours for the year ahead, and plenty trend forward choices from recent years too.

Wow not one day but I’ll take your high fives.

The colour on the walls is Calypso from Benjamin Moore, and that’s just one coat. Trim is being painted Chantilly Lace to flow with the rest of the home. Door casements have been removed to sand and remove a mix of tape and paint. They’ll be painted but when you’re investing in expensive custom wallpaper, new flooring and a flat ceiling, I will go the extra mile.

This will likely be the last time I call in a seasoned wallpaper expert but wait til you see the paper, and I’m sure you’ll agree, i always look after the interests of my clients. This paper is expensive even by wallpaper standards so an extra hand will be great. This will be my 3rd wallpaper install with Kirsten and then the student will be ready to tackle your wallpapering needs. And plaster. And paint. And trim from cutting to installing and painting.

The teal/blue-greens always look so nice with darker woods (the flooring) and just really make things pop. Great choice Megan!!

Flattening a popcorn ceiling takes time. Unlike walls, on which a painter can hide less that a perfectly level surface (check your walls folks, they’re rarely plumb or square) a ceiling that’s had popcorn can typically have some wild fluctuations in height. Popcorn (or stucco, or orange peel) is often used to hide the shadows that an unlevel ceiling painted white can show. Homebuilders and tapers prefer to hide the variations rather than make them perfectly flat so that a roller glides without leaving heaving lines or blank spots.

Having flattened most of the ceilings in this home, I know what to expect; multiple coats to create a largely flat surface prior to some final sk coats. Typically I’ll use a quick set powder for the first phase eliminating the deepest shallow spots.

My clients also know to expect minimal dust outside the room I’m working in, due to my use of “dustless” sanding equipment.

But I kinda can’t wait to put up the stunning wallpaper my client selected for this room. Stay tuned.

This one is speeding along. Despite a few rain days, September weather is much more conducive to working outside. And a big rented lift means I do my best to keep jobs moving along.

Surface prep on the gable is nearly finished. A few coats of primer on the fascia now with wood filler in between to get a nice smooth finish prior to topcoats and the installation of trim. The reusable trim now stripped and where required glued up. Priming and filling of that to follow. Meanwhile new trim pieces are primed; dentil moulding even has some colour to it.

The fan and surrounding window sash (the fan plopped unceremoniously through the middle) does require some greater attention. A trip to the client’s attic is in store for your favourite painter. (That’s me and if it isn’t I still don’t know why 😉😀.)

New trim all freshly primed, it’s time to play with the colours. What better piece to use than a strip of dentil moulding?

I’ve always wanted to do a play on red white and blue (a faded Union Jack was in my brain.) Red brick seems to lend itself well to a deep red so that was just where my mind was headed when I suggested the colours to these clients.

During their consideration leading up to the project the green became a part of the scheme and with some discussion about personal histories and such, some design ideas emerged.

But I needed to actually see these colours together, or side by side to be more accurate, to really start building the eventual design in my head. At least loosely. It sounds a tad pretentious to say I let the gable speak to me but … that’s sort of how it goes.

And they have tended to look pretty good.

I’m of course open to plenty of direction from clients right down to a legend showing where colours should go. It’s your home and your investment after all so you should come home to something that speaks to you, and puts a smile on your face.

Either way… see you next summer (after this one’s done I have lots of time for interiors in both historic and new homes.)
